Chapter 5 - The Police Warrant

(Approx. 1,500 words)
The atmosphere in the hospital consultation room turned ice-cold as my words hung in the air.
Sibil remained on her knees, her hands slowly slipping off the edge of the glass table. She looked at me not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying realization that her authority over me had completely vanished.
"You're a monster," Sibil whispered, her voice trembling with pure venom. "A cold, unfeeling, mathematical monster."
"No, Sibil," I replied smoothly, leaning back in my chair. "I am an actuary. I simply assign accurate values to risk and debt. You and Fallon accrued a massive moral and financial deficit. Today is simply the date of settlement."
The double doors of the room opened again.
This time, it wasn't hospital security. Officer Davis stepped into the room, accompanied by three plainclothes detectives and an assistant district attorney carrying a manila case file.
Fallon gasped, scrambling backward in her chair until her back hit the wall. "No... no, please! Mom, do something!"
Officer Davis walked directly up to Fallon, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.
"Fallon Ward," Officer Davis announced clearly, reading from a formal document. "You are under arrest pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the State of New York. You are charged with Felony Assault in the First Degree with a Dangerous Chemical Weapon, Reckless Endangerment, and Intentional Mutilation."
"It was an accident!" Fallon screamed, flailing her arms as the detectives grabbed her wrists and pinned them behind her back. "It was just a prank for social media! Tell them, Sloan! Tell them it was a prank!"
"You have the right to remain silent," the detective recited calmly, ignoring her frantic shrieks. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As they pulled Fallon toward the exit, Sibil scrambled to her feet, grabbing Officer Davis’s arm. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? Call our attorney! Call Julian Sterling!"
"Mr. Sterling’s legal team filed an order of protection against both of you two hours ago, Mrs. Ward," Assistant District Attorney Vance remarked dryly, stepping forward. "And as for you, Mrs. Ward..."
The ADA pulled a second set of documents from his file.
"Sibil Ward, you are being served with a grand jury subpoena regarding grand larceny, corporate tax fraud, and conspiracy to commit financial embezzlement tied to Fallon Ward Beauty LLC," the ADA stated. "You are instructed to surrender your passport to the state prosecutor's office by 5:00 PM today."
Sibil stumbled backward, her hand flying to her chest as if she had been hit by a physical blow. Her pristine world—her high-society status, her luxury brownstone, her daughter's celebrity status—was disintegrating around her in real-time.
"Sloan... please..." Fallon sobbed as the detectives dragged her down the hallway, her designer shoes dragging uselessly against the polished floor. "Sloan, don't let them take me! Please!"
I sat motionless, watching my sister disappear through the double doors until her screams faded into the distant hum of the hospital corridors.
Once the room was quiet again, Marcus Vance closed his leather notebook and looked at me over his glasses.
"The state prosecutor has a rock-solid case, Sloan," Marcus said. "With the forensic lab reports, the raw ballroom video, the chemical purchase receipts, and her spontaneous confession just now, she is looking at a mandatory minimum sentence of seven to fifteen years in a state penitentiary."
"And the company assets?" I asked.
"The foreclosure on the Upper East Side brownstone is officially filed," Marcus replied. "We take physical possession on Friday. The intellectual property of Fallon Ward Beauty—including the formulations, trademarks, and distribution channels—is now 100% owned by Ward Guardian Assets."
"Good," I said, standing up from my chair for the first time in three days. "Prepare a formal rebranding strategy."
Maya looked at me, surprised. "You're keeping the company?"
"I built the infrastructure, Maya," I said, walking over to the window and looking out at the skyline of New York. "Fallon was just the face on the packaging. We are liquidating her name, firing her entire marketing team, and converting the brand into a specialized clinical reconstructive skincare line."
"A clinical skincare line?" Maya repeated, a slow, brilliant smile spreading across her face.
"Yes," I replied, touching the smooth fabric covering my healing cheek. "A brand dedicated entirely to supporting burn victims, trauma survivors, and women recovering from severe skin injuries. We will allocate forty percent of all profits to fund reconstructive surgeries for low-income patients."

Marcus chuckled softly, shaking his head with immense professional respect. "A masterclass in corporate pivot and social utility. You're taking her toxic legacy and turning it into a fortress."
"She wanted to be famous for beauty," I whispered, watching my reflection in the dark glass of the window. "I’m going to make sure this company is remembered for healing."
