Chapter 5 - Evelyn's Desperation

At 1:30 PM, I arrived at the Westchester County Courthouse in White Plains for the formal arraignment hearing.
The media circus had already begun. Local news vans from NBC New York, CBS, and ABC lined the perimeter of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. High-society scandals in Westchester always drew headlines, but a scandal involving an elite family, an elite Harvard student, and a sitting federal judge was ratings gold.
As I walked up the marble steps flanked by two federal marshals, a sleek black Mercedes-Maybach pulled up to the curb. Evelyn Vance stepped out, accompanied by Arthur Pendelton and two junior associates carrying heavy leather briefcases.
Evelyn looked completely disheveled. Her signature blow-dried hair was windswept, her eyes were bloodshot, and her expensive wool coat was buttoned crookedly. When she spotted me, she broke away from her legal team and rushed toward me, her heels clicking frantically against the granite.
"Diana! Diana, stop!" she pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation.
Marcus Cole immediately stepped between us, placing a broad, gloved hand against Evelyn’s path. "Stand back, ma'am."
"Get out of my way, you thug!" Evelyn hissed at Marcus before turning her pleading gaze back to me. "Diana, please! Look at me! I am your mother!"
I stopped on the third step, looking down at her from above. "What do you want, Evelyn?"
"You have to stop this madness right now!" Evelyn cried, clutching her pearl necklace with trembling fingers. "Arthur just got off the phone with Harvard! They’ve suspended Ethan! They threw his clothes into garbage bags on the street! And Sullivan & Cromwell canceled his contract! Do you have any idea what you've done?!"
"I didn't do that, Evelyn," I said calmly. "Ethan did that when he shoved an eight-year-old girl and broke her leg. Karen did that when she stomped on her."
"It was an accident! He was stressed! Final exams are next week!" Evelyn’s voice rose to a shrill shriek that drew the attention of nearby camera crews. "He is twenty-four years old! You can't ruin his entire life over one mistake!"
"One mistake?" I took a step closer, my eyes boring into hers. "Ethan has spent his entire life abusing everyone around him because you taught him that money and the Vance name made him a god. You let him bully his classmates. You paid off the family of that girl he assaulted at Dartmouth three years ago. You covered up his drunk-driving crash in the Hamptons. You created this monster, Mother. And now, the bill has come due."
Evelyn’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "We are your family! How can you be so cold?! So heartless?!"
"Where was your heart last night, Evelyn?" I whispered, my voice dripping with ice. "When Lily was screaming on the floor with her bone sticking against her skin, you didn't check on her. You didn't hold her hand. You slapped me across the face and told me to hide her in a private clinic so Ethan wouldn't have a blemish on his resume. You don't have a family, Evelyn. You have an investment portfolio. And your investments just went bankrupt."
Arthur Pendelton rushed up the steps, trying to grab Evelyn’s arm. "Evelyn, please, be quiet! The microphones are picking up every word!"
"I don't care about the microphones!" Evelyn wailed. She looked at me, her arrogance suddenly collapsing into genuine, trembling panic. "Diana... the bail hearing is in twenty minutes. The judge is going to set cash bail. But... Arthur checked the accounts this morning. The bank... the bank won't release the funds!"
I raised an eyebrow. "Really? What happened to the vast Vance dynasty fortune?"
Arthur stepped forward, looking thoroughly humiliated. "Diana... as you know, the estate in Scarsdale has three outstanding mortgages. The primary operating accounts were tied to the commercial real estate trust you restructured five years ago. Because of the federal protective order filed this morning, the Southern District has frozen all family trusts that list Ethan or Karen as secondary beneficiaries pending an asset-tracing investigation."
Evelyn grabbed Arthur’s lapels. "What does that mean?! Tell her to unfreeze it! I need two hundred thousand dollars to post bail for my daughter and my grandson!"
"She can't unfreeze it, Evelyn," Arthur muttered, looking down at his shoes. "The federal freeze was signed by the Chief Judge of the SDNY. Diana is the primary trustee and owner of the underlying collateral. Evelyn... the money you’ve been spending for the last four years wasn't the Vance inheritance. It was Diana’s personal earnings and investments."
Evelyn froze. She turned slowly to look at me, her eyes wide with uncomprehending horror.
"You... you paid for everything?" Evelyn whispered, horrified. "The gardeners? The club memberships? The maintenance on the estate?"
"Every single cent," I said coldly. "I let you believe the family trust was still solvent because I wanted to honor Dad’s memory. I paid Ethan’s tuition because I thought he might actually use his education to make something honorable of himself. But yesterday, you showed me who you truly are. So as of 8:00 AM this morning, I resigned as trustee. The accounts are frozen. The Scarsdale estate is entering default. And you, Mother, will have to use a public defender if Arthur doesn't want to work for free."
Evelyn’s knees buckled. Arthur had to catch her under the arms to keep her from collapsing onto the courthouse steps.

I didn't spare her another second of my time. I turned around, walked through the heavy brass doors of the courthouse, and entered Courtroom 302 to watch the law take its course.
