Chapter 9 - The Steel Trap

I raised my right hand and tapped the face of my watch.

The adjoining bedroom door swung open.

Sergeant Kowalski stepped out into the light, flanked by two armed detectives in tactical vests, their badges gleaming under the chandelier. From the hallway behind Veronica, Marcus Thorne walked into the room, holding a thick legal file and a digital recorder.

Veronica sprang out of her chair, her face draining of color, her hand diving into her designer tote.

“Don't even think about it, Veronica,” Kowalski commanded, his weapon unholstered and leveled at her chest. “Keep your hands where we can see them. Drop the bag on the floor.”

Her designer bag fell to the carpet with a dull thud.

“David!” she shrieked, her voice cracking with pure panic. “What is this? What have you done? I warned you! The press will ruin you! Arthur has the releases scheduled!”

“Arthur Vance-Perez is currently sitting in a holding cell at the 18th District, singing like a canary to the Cook County prosecutor,” Marcus said, tossing the file onto the table next to her silver USB drive. “He gave up your encrypted server passwords, your alias documentation, and the location of your safe-deposit boxes in exchange for a third-degree misdemeanor plea.”

“You’re lying!” she gasped, backing up against the fireplace mantle.

“Furthermore,” I said, stepping forward until I stood three feet from her, “your brother Julian was remarkably cooperative this afternoon. He handed over my father’s watch, my mother’s emeralds, and the sapphire necklace you thought you were going to auction in London.”

Her eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an exit, a weapon, an excuse—anything to maintain the illusion of control she had wielded for seventeen months.

“And as for your leverage against my company,” I continued, my voice steady, ice-cold, and relentless, “this entire suite has been live-streaming to the Cook County Grand Jury for the past twenty minutes. Your extortion demands, your admission of framing Teresa, your confession to corporate blackmail—it’s all preserved on an unalterable judicial record. There will be no press scandal, Veronica. There will only be a press release announcing the arrest of a serial predator.”

“You bastard!” she spat, her face contorting into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. The elegant socialite was completely gone; in her place was a feral, cornered criminal. “You pathetic, lonely old man! You think anyone ever loved you? Your mother died, your father died, and you were so desperate for someone to touch you that you bought every single lie I fed you! You’re nothing! You’re just an empty suit with a bank account!”

“Perhaps I was lonely,” I said quietly, looking down at her with complete indifference. “Perhaps I wanted to believe in the illusion you sold me. But my father taught me that a man’s worth is measured by how he protects the people who stand by him when the storms hit. Teresa is family. You were just a bad investment.”

Sergeant Kowalski stepped forward and grabbed her wrists, twisting them behind her back. The steel handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final snap.

“Veronica Cross,” Kowalski recited, pulling her toward the door. “You are under arrest for grand larceny in excess of one million dollars, felony extortion, domestic battery, and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent...”

As they dragged her down the corridor toward the service elevators, her screams echoed down the hallway of the Drake, high-pitched, vulgar, and utterly impotent, before the heavy fire doors shut and cut her off forever.

Marcus walked over to the table, picked up the silver USB drive, and dropped it into an evidence bag.

“It’s over, David,” he said quietly.

I walked over to the tall windows and looked down at Lake Shore Drive. The snow was falling thick and white, covering the city in a clean, quiet blanket, burying the scars of the day beneath an ocean of peace.

“No, Marcus,” I said, turning away from the window. “Now the work begins.”
