Chapter 6 - The Trap Tightens

Evan Bennett had not remained behind bars.
Earlier that afternoon, before Melissa had finished her official statement and before the grand jury could formally unseal the upgraded attempted murder indictment, Evan’s attorney had rushed to the county courthouse with a cashier's check.
Victor Vance, desperate to ensure Evan didn't break under interrogation and name him as a co-conspirator, had funneled fifty thousand dollars through a third-party bail bondsman to secure Evan's temporary release on the initial, lesser charge of aggravated battery.
Evan had walked out of the downtown jail at six o'clock.
He hadn't gone to his home. He had gone straight to a local dive bar, consumed four double whiskeys, and discovered that Melissa and Chloe were gone. His house was taped off with yellow police tape. His bank accounts were frozen. His life was in ashes.
And in his shattered, alcohol-soaked mind, there was only one person responsible: the sister who had refused to play along.
"Evan, stop!" Daniel roared, standing at the top of the dark stairwell, raising the wooden bat in a two-handed grip. "The police are two minutes away! Get out of this house!"
Evan reached the landing. In the dim hallway light, he looked like a wild animal. His button-down shirt was torn and filthy, his hair was matted with sweat and rain, and his eyes were bloodshot and dilated with unhinged rage. In his right hand, he held a heavy, rusted steel tire iron, dripping with rainwater from the yard.
"Get out of my way, Daniel!" Evan screamed, swinging the tire iron through the air with a vicious swoosh. "This is family business! She took my wife! She took my daughter!"
Rachel stepped into the hallway behind Daniel, clutching her phone to her ear. "The operator is on the line, Evan! Officers are on this street right now! Drop the weapon!"
"You think you’re so much better than me, don't you?" Evan snarled, taking another heavy step up the stairs. "Grandma loved me! She built that trust for *us*, not just for you! You sat on that money while I was drowning! You could have written a check! You could have saved my business!"
"You borrowed money from loan sharks and gambled it away!" Rachel yelled back, her voice shaking with righteous fury. "And then you put metal in a cake to blind me! You are a monster, Evan!"
Evan let out a guttural roar and lunged up the final three steps, raising the tire iron high above his head to strike Daniel.
Daniel swung the baseball bat with everything he had.
The heavy ash wood connected solidly with Evan’s left shoulder with a sickening, hollow thud. Evan screamed in pain, dropping the tire iron as he stumbled backward. But the momentum of his charge carried him forward, tackling Daniel around the waist.
Both men crashed onto the hardwood floor of the upper hallway in a violent, thrashing tangle of limbs.
Evan, driven by blind, psychotic panic, gouged his fingers toward Daniel’s eyes. Daniel threw a short, brutal punch into Evan’s ribs, rolling him onto his side. The tire iron went clattering down the wooden staircase, banging against the steps like a drum.
Rachel didn't freeze. Not this time.
She grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp from the corner of the hallway, ripped the cord from the wall outlet, and brought the weighted metal base down hard across Evan’s raised forearm.
Evan shrieked, clutching his bruised wrist, pinned beneath Daniel’s weight.
Downstairs, the front door burst open with a deafening crash.
"Police! Don't move! Kansas City Police!"
Heavy tactical boots thundered up the staircase. Within three seconds, Officer Davies and two other officers flooded the landing, their service weapons drawn and tactical flashlights blinding the hallway in piercing white light.
"Hands behind your back! Now! Face down on the floor!"
Davies shoved Evan flat against the floorboards, planting a heavy knee into the small of his back. The sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs echoed through the hallway.
Evan thrashed against the floor, spitting blood and saliva onto the wood. "Get off me! She attacked me! It’s self-defense! She’s trying to steal my inheritance!"
Detective Laura Kim walked up the stairs, holstering her weapon, her face set in stone. She looked down at Evan with undisguised contempt.
"Mr. Bennett," Kim said coldly. "The grand jury just returned a true bill. You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, burglary in the first degree, witness tampering, and aggravated domestic battery. You won't be seeing a bail bondsman tonight. Or for the next twenty-five years."
Two officers dragged Evan to his feet. As they hauled him down the stairs, Evan glared back at Rachel over his shoulder. The manic rage in his eyes flickered, replaced for a split second by the terrified, pathetic boy who had always hidden behind his mother’s skirts whenever he was caught in a lie.
Rachel stood beside Daniel, her chest heaving, her hand resting against her stitched cheek. The house was filled with the flashing red and blue strobe of police cruisers reflecting against the wet living room walls.
The siege was over. The physical danger had passed.

But as Detective Kim turned to Rachel with a solemn look in her eyes, Rachel knew the emotional reckoning was only just beginning.
