Chapter 17 - The Seattle Interlude

By Wednesday evening, the corporate meetings concluded with a lavish networking dinner at a revolving rooftop restaurant overlooking the glittering expanse of the Seattle skyline. The Space Needle pierced the clouds in the distance, illuminated by violet and azure lights that reflected off the wet pavement below. I stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of sparkling water, chatting with a senior vice president of supply chain about automated warehouse integration. The atmosphere was sophisticated, charged with ambition and the quiet camaraderie of high achievers who understood the relentless drive required to reach the top.

Yet, even in the midst of professional triumph, a quiet unease lingered at the edge of my consciousness. My phone rested heavily in the pocket of my tailored blazer. All week, I had kept notifications silenced, deliberately resisting the urge to check local Ohio news outlets or court docket updates regarding my father’s preliminary hearings. I wanted this week to be entirely mine—untainted by the toxic gravity of my family name. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. As the dinner wound down and guests began drifting toward the private elevators, my phone buzzed sharply against my leg. I pulled it out, expecting a routine calendar reminder from my assistant, Sarah. Instead, the screen displayed an urgent, high-priority email notification from an unknown, encrypted domain, bearing a subject line that made my blood run instantly cold: *“Your father’s trial is just a distraction. Look closer at who really inherited the offshore trust.”* My fingers hovered over the glass screen, the glittering Seattle lights suddenly blurring into a chaotic smear of neon as the realization struck me like a physical blow: the war wasn't over. Someone else was still pulling the strings from the shadows.
