Chapter 15 - The Public Confession

Thursday morning broke with a heavy, gray mist rolling off the river and blanketing the apple orchard in a damp, ghostly silence. I stood on the back porch with my laptop open on the small wooden table, watching the blinking cursor on a blank document while the coffee grew cold in my cup.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was funereal. Mom and Dad were upstairs packing a small bag, preparing to drive back to the suburban house to begin the gut-wrenching process of listing it for immediate auction. They had realized there was no escape hatch, no rich uncle to bail them out, and no clever legal loophole left to exploit.

My phone buzzed on the table. It was a notification from Instagram.

Amanda was currently live-streaming.

I clicked the notification, my screen instantly filling with Amanda’s face. She wasn't sitting in her luxury downtown apartment with its ring lights and curated aesthetic background. She was sitting in Grandma’s modest, sunlit kitchen, wearing a plain gray sweatshirt with no makeup on, her hair pulled back into a messy, unstyled ponytail.

The viewer count was climbing at an astronomical rate—five thousand, ten thousand, twenty thousand live viewers tuning in to see what the disgraced influencer had to say after two weeks of absolute radio silence. The live chat was scrolling at a blinding speed, full of speculation, hate comments, eager fans, and internet trolls demanding answers.

*“Where have you been? Are you canceled?”*

*“Is the boutique going out of business?”*

*“Did you fake the whole family feud for clout?”*

Amanda took a deep, shaky breath, looking directly into the camera lens with a raw, unfiltered vulnerability that I had never seen from her before.

"Hey guys," she said, her voice steadying after the first two words. "I’m not here today to promote a brand. I’m not here to launch a new product, and I’m not here to play the victim."

She paused, swallowing hard as she read some of the faster comments flashing past.

"For the past three years, I’ve lied to you," Amanda continued, her voice clear and uncompromising. "I’ve posted pictures of a lifestyle I didn't earn, funded by money that didn't belong to me. I helped orchestrate a financial deception that drained hundreds of thousands of dollars from my family’s estate—money that should have gone toward preserving the farm where my grandmother built her life. And when my brother Ethan tried to hold me accountable, I used this exact platform to smear his name, paint him as the villain, and protect my own fragile, fake image."

The live chat froze. For three full seconds, the endless stream of scrolling comments simply stopped, as if tens of thousands of internet strangers were holding their breath simultaneously.

"Every post about my independent success was a lie," Amanda said, tears finally slipping down her cheeks, though she didn't wipe them away. "Every luxury item, every staged apartment tour, every bit of drama I manufactured to keep your attention—it was all built on a foundation of theft and deception. My social media accounts are going dark after this live stream. All brand partnerships are terminated. I am cooperating fully with legal authorities and my family to return every single cent I took."

She looked directly into the lens, her gaze burning with a sudden, fierce integrity.

"I don't deserve your forgiveness, and I’m not asking for your sympathy. I’m just telling you the truth. Because for the first time in my life, the truth is the only thing that matters. Goodbye."

With a single tap of her finger, she ended the broadcast.
