Chapter 7 - The Cleansed Slate

The rest of December passed in a blur of peaceful domestic bliss that we had never experienced before in our marriage. Without the crushing psychological weight of Patricia’s toxic expectations and the constant bleeding of our finances, our home felt like a true sanctuary.
We spent our weekends baking gingerbread cookies, taking long walks through the snow-dusted neighborhood parks, and watching holiday movies wrapped in heavy woolen blankets by the fire. Lily was happy, laughing freely without ever having to witness the ugly undercurrents of adult greed and family manipulation.
On December 23rd, Richard invited us over to his new apartment downtown for a quiet, intimate dinner.
His new place was a modest, sunlit two-bedroom apartment overlooking the frozen expanse of Lake Erie. It smelled of fresh coffee, old books, and pine needles. Richard looked healthier and younger than he had in years; the perpetual worry lines etched deep into his forehead seemed to have softened, and a genuine, relaxed smile graced his face.
“Pass the potatoes, Grandpa!” Lily chirped happily, digging into a plate of homemade roast beef and mashed potatoes.
Richard laughed heartily, handing the ceramic bowl across the table. “Coming right up, Princess.”
As we sat around the small dining table, eating a meal that didn't involve forced political arguments or passive-aggressive insults from Madison, I looked across at Ethan. He caught my eye and raised his water glass in a silent, affectionate toast. We had survived the ultimate test of our marriage, emerging bruised but unbreakable.
“So,” Richard said, setting down his fork and wiping his mouth with a linen napkin. “Have either of you heard anything about your mother or sister?”
Ethan shook his head, slicing a piece of roast beef. “Not a peep. Dad, do you know where she ended up?”
“She’s staying in a cheap extended-stay motel off the highway in the industrial district,” Richard answered, his tone completely neutral, lacking any trace of malice or regret. “She tried to get financial assistance from the state welfare programs, but because her name was tied to multiple fraudulent real estate filings and shell corporations, her applications were flagged for fraud investigation.”
“And Madison?” I asked.
“Madison moved into a cramped studio apartment with a roommate on the other side of the city,” Richard sighed. “She tried to contact me for rent money last week. I told her that if she wanted financial support, she needed to get a job at the local grocery store and start paying her own way, just like everyone else. She hasn't called back since.”
It was a harsh reality check, but it was the only medicine that could possibly cure the deep-seated entitlement plaguing the Gallagher women. They had spent their entire lives believing the world owed them a luxury lifestyle funded by other people's labor. Now, stripped of their illusions, they were finally forced to face the real world.
After dinner, while Lily played quietly with a wooden puzzle in the corner and Richard brewed a fresh pot of dark roast coffee, Ethan walked out onto the apartment balcony to take a work call.
I stepped out behind him a few minutes later, wrapping my arms around my waist against the biting evening chill coming off the lake.
Ethan hung up the phone, turning around with a bright, triumphant grin on his face.
“Guess who that was?” he asked.
“Who?”
“That was the senior partner at my firm,” Ethan said, his voice buzzing with excitement. “They just announced the corporate restructuring for the new fiscal year. They’re opening a brand-new regional headquarters in Chicago... and they offered me the senior director position to run the entire branch.”
My eyes widened in shock and pure joy. “Chicago?! Ethan, that’s a massive promotion! That’s double your current salary!”
“And the best part,” Ethan laughed, pulling me tightly against his chest, burying his face in my hair, “is that it’s three hundred miles away from Columbus. A completely fresh start. New city, new friends, and a life built entirely on our own terms.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate kiss.
“Let’s pack our bags,” I whispered against his lips.
