Chapter 9 - A NEW CHAPTER AT WORK

With the emotional storm of the divorce settled, my focus at work sharpened dramatically. Free from the constant mental exhaustion of a dying marriage, my performance in supply chain management soared.
Within eight months, our company launched a massive regional expansion. My director called me into his corner office on a Friday afternoon.
"Darren, take a seat," he said, sliding a leather-bound folder across his desk. "We're opening a new centralized logistics hub oversight team, and we need someone grounded, analytical, and completely reliable to lead it. The executive board unanimously voted to offer you the Vice President of Regional Logistics position."
I stared at the offer sheet. The promotion came with a significant salary increase, equity stock options, and a seat on the executive committee.
"I don't know what to say, Arthur," I said, a smile breaking across my face. "Thank you."
"You earned it, Darren," he replied, shaking my hand warmly. "Over the past year, while going through a tough personal transition, you've been the most dependable pillar in this entire department. You deserve this."
That evening, I took Mia and Jonah out to a high-end steakhouse downtown to celebrate. We sat at a round booth by the window, laughing, eating good food, and talking about their upcoming school semester.
"Vice President of Logistics sounds super fancy, Dad," Mia teased, raising her glass of sparkling cider. "Does this mean we get a dog now?"
Jonah gasped, looking up with wide eyes. "Wait, can we?! A golden retriever?!"

I laughed, looking between my two happy, thriving children. "We'll see. Let's get the rest of the boxes unpacked first."
As we sat there clinking our glasses together, I caught my reflection in the dark glass of the restaurant window. The man looking back at me was no longer the quiet, beat-down husband who had taken humiliation in silence at a holiday table. He was strong, confident, and entirely in control of his own destiny.
