Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

When a narcissist loses control of their narrative, their first instinct is to double down. Their second instinct is to wage a war of public perception.

By Tuesday morning, Chelsea had launched a full-scale digital smear campaign.

Having recovered from her initial shock, she posted an eight-minute emotional video on TikTok and Instagram, filmed in her childhood bedroom with theatrical lighting and soft, melancholic acoustic guitar playing in the background.

“Hey, guys,” Chelsea said into the camera, dabbing a tissue beneath her eyes. “I never thought I’d have to make a video like this. But so many of you saw what happened on Saturday on Northwest 23rd, and the rumors are getting out of hand. The truth is... my older sister, who has struggled with severe mental health issues and deep-seated jealousy for years, orchestrated an illegal repossession of the car my parents gifted me for Christmas. She used her corporate connections to fabricate documents because she couldn't stand seeing our family happy. My mother has been hospitalized with stress-induced heart complications, and my father is currently working with legal counsel to hold her accountable. Please send prayers to our family during this unimaginable trial.”

The video exploded. Within twelve hours, it garnered over three hundred thousand views and thousands of comments calling me a monster, a toxic sister, and a sociopath. Several commenters even attempted to tag my engineering firm’s public social media accounts, demanding that I be fired.

Monica was pacing the living room, fuming. “That little viper! Iris, let me blast her in the comments! I have the receipts! I will post the police report right now!”

“No,” I said quietly, sitting at the dining table with a cup of Earl Grey tea. “Don't engage on her battlefield, Monica. When someone throws mud on the internet, wrestling them only gets you dirty. We fight in the courtroom. We fight with sworn affidavits under penalty of perjury.”

Right on cue, my laptop pinged with an email from Marcus.

*Subject: Motion Filed & Cease-and-Desist Served.*

Marcus hadn't wasted a second.

At 9:00 a.m. that morning, a certified process server had walked up the front steps of my parents’ home in Portland and handed Richard Collins a thick legal envelope containing three documents:

1. An emergency petition for a pre-judgment attachment lien against their suburban Portland residence and their Mount Hood vacation cabin, based on the documented theft of the Arthur Vance Testamentary Trust.

2. A formal civil summons for eighty-four thousand dollars in stolen trust funds, plus sixty thousand dollars in indemnification for the fraudulent BMW loan.

3. An emergency cease-and-desist and defamation notice served directly to Chelsea Collins, notifying her that her viral video constituted *defamation per se*, carrying statutory damages exceeding one hundred thousand dollars due to her public targeting of my professional engineering licensure.

Attached to the packet was a USB drive containing Detective Miller’s official police report, the surveillance footage from Portland Prestige Motors showing Dad committing forgery, and the full audio transcripts of Dad’s extortion voicemails.

At the very end of the legal demand, Marcus had typed a single sentence in bold, twelve-point font:

**“Your response is required within twenty-four hours at the law offices of Evans & Associates, Portland Branch. Failure to appear will result in the immediate unsealing of all criminal complaints with the Multnomah County District Attorney.”**

At 11:45 a.m., my firm’s corporate PR director called my cell.

“Iris?” she said, her voice warm and entirely supportive. “I just wanted to let you know that our executive leadership team received an influx of bizarre social media tags this morning regarding your personal family situation. The CEO, Mr. Henderson, reviewed the legal briefing Marcus Evans provided to the board an hour ago.”

My stomach tightened instinctively. “What did Mr. Henderson say?”

“He said,” the director chuckled warmly, “that anyone who can design earthquake-resistant bridges while simultaneously out-maneuvering a syndicate of family fraudsters deserves an immediate public press release. We just posted the official announcement of your appointment as Senior Structural Lead on our global LinkedIn, our corporate website, and our industry press network. And our legal team has officially notified the social media platforms that any defamatory posts tagging our firm will be met with immediate copyright strikes and litigation. You are fully protected here, Iris. Focus on your work.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

For the first time in my life, the people around me weren't asking me to sacrifice myself to make someone else comfortable. They were standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me, forming an impenetrable barrier against the storm.

Twenty minutes later, my phone lit up with a text message from an unknown number.

It was Dad. His bluster was completely gone, replaced by the frantic, groveling desperation of a trapped animal.

*Iris. Please. Call off Evans. Don’t do this to your mother and me. Let’s sit down and talk like a family. We’ll meet you anywhere you want.*

I stared at the screen for ten seconds.

Then I typed four words back:

May you like

*Tomorrow. 10:00 AM. Marcus’s office.*
