Chapter 9 - The Toast

By 9:30 PM, the main ballroom was packed to capacity. The murmur of high-society conversation filled the air as guests mingled near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city lights.

My chief operating officer, Marcus Chen, tapped a crystal glass with a small silver spoon, calling for attention from the dais.

The room quieted instantly. Hundreds of faces turned toward the central stage.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues, and honored guests,” Marcus began, his voice booming warmly through the sound system. “As many of you know, Asterline Engineering Group was founded on a simple, stubborn premise: that true innovation doesn’t come from following corporate templates or bowing to conventional hierarchies. It comes from vision, relentless hard work, and the courage to build something entirely your own from the ground up.”

A polite wave of applause rippled through the crowd.

“Tonight, we celebrate not just a new building, but a new standard of engineering excellence across the region,” Marcus continued, smiling broadly. “And none of this would have been possible without the brilliant mind, fierce leadership, and unyielding determination of our founder and CEO. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in welcoming to the stage—Dr. Rowan Mercer.”

The room erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.

Flashbulbs popped. Applause echoed off the glass walls. I smoothed the front of my midnight-blue gown, took a deep breath, and walked gracefully up the glass steps to the podium.

As I stood beneath the warm spotlight, looking out over a sea of hundreds of powerful, influential people who had come to celebrate what my company had built, I felt a profound sense of lightness.

I didn't have to shrink. I didn't have to apologize. I didn't have to wait for anyone's permission to take up space.

“Thank you, Marcus, and thank you all for being here tonight,” I began, my voice carrying clear and steady through the microphone.

Down in the rear service corridor, behind the heavy frosted double doors of the kitchen staging area, I knew my parents were standing in the shadows, listening through the crack in the frame, surrounded by ice machines and dirty linen carts.

“People often ask me what the secret is to building a successful enterprise,” I said, letting my gaze sweep across the glittering crowd. “They ask about capital, about market trends, about strategic partnerships.”

I paused, smiling slightly as I thought of the seating charts, the aprons, and the years of being told where I belonged.

“I tell them that success isn’t about the partnerships you inherit,” I said clearly, every word ringing with absolute finality. “It’s about the people you choose to sit at your table. It’s about building a foundation so strong that nobody can ever pull the rug out from under you again. And most importantly... it’s about making sure your name is written at the very top of your own guest list.”

The ballroom erupted into another wave of deafening applause and cheering.

I raised a glass of sparkling cider toward the crowd, basking in the light of the empire I had built with my own hands.
