Chapter 6 - The Fracture of an Empire

Derek’s hands hovered in the air for a fraction of a second, his knuckles white against the fading amber light of the Oakridge Country Club parking lot. The accusation hung between us, heavy and suffocating, poisoned by the undeniable weight of the truth. He looked past me into the sterile, illuminated interior of the mobile intensive care unit where Willa lay resting under the steady hiss of an oxygen monitor, and for the briefest flicker of a heartbeat, his arrogant veneer cracked.

"You don't know what you're talking about," Derek stammered, his voice pitching slightly upward, betraying the rising panic he was trying so desperately to mask. He took a nervous step back, bumping squarely against the solid, unyielding chest of one of Marcus’s towering enforcers. "Chloe... Chloe was just trying to scare her. Willa tripped! It was a terrible accident. You’re turning a simple domestic misunderstanding into a kidnapping conspiracy—"

"A domestic misunderstanding?" I stepped off the metal bumper of the van, closing the distance between us until I was staring straight into his terrified, bloodshot eyes. "She has nineteen distinct impact fractures on her skull, Derek. Nineteen. That isn't a misunderstanding. That is an execution attempt carried out by your mistress while you stood there filming it for your sick little entertainment."

Derek flinched, the color draining entirely from his face. "How... how could you possibly know about—" He caught himself instantly, snapping his mouth shut, but the damage was already done. His own tongue had betrayed him.

Marcus stepped forward, a dark, humorless chuckle rumbling deep in his chest. He reached into his tactical jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy-duty military-grade tablet. With a flick of his thumb, he woke the screen, casting a cold blue light across Derek’s sweating face.

"Cloud backups are a funny thing, Derek," Marcus said smoothly, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing register. "You rich guys think your encrypted drives and password-protected folders make you gods. But when you sync your phone to the same house Wi-Fi network where my corporate forensic team has a passive packet-sniffer running twenty-four-seven? Every deleted file, every cached video stream, and every frantic text message comes straight to my desk."

Derek stared at the tablet screen as if it were a venomous snake. On the display, playing in crystal-clear, high-definition loop, was a video shot from a slightly elevated angle in our garage. In it, Chloe swung a taped-handle aluminum baseball bat downward with sickening force, while behind the lens, Derek’s distinct, wheezing laughter echoed through the audio track.

"Delete that," Derek hissed, lunging forward with a desperate, pathetic grab for the tablet.

Marcus didn't even flinch. He simply shifted his weight slightly, sidestepped Derek’s clumsy lunge, and delivered a short, brutal palm strike directly to Derek’s sternum. The wind exploded from Derek’s lungs in a loud, wet gasp as he collapsed hard onto the gravel driveway, clutching his chest and wheezing for air.

"Listen to me very carefully, you pathetic piece of trash," Marcus leaned down, grabbing a fistful of Derek’s expensive silk golf polo and hauling him up until their faces were inches apart. "Your father’s law firm, your country club memberships, your offshore accounts—they all belong to us now. Every single asset, every single brick of your little suburban empire has been legally frozen, re-routed, or seized as collateral before you even drew your first breath this morning."

Derek looked up at Marcus, tears of humiliation and sheer terror spilling over his eyelids. "Who... who are you people?"

"We are the family you forgot you married into," I said quietly, walking past Marcus to stand over my trembling husband. I looked down at the man who had vowed to protect me and our child, feeling nothing—absolutely nothing—except a profound, chilling emptiness. "And trust me, Derek. Prison is going to feel like a five-star resort compared to what we have planned for you."
