Chapter 7 - The Hot Mic

A high-pitched acoustic squeal shattered the quiet of the penthouse.

Every flat-screen television across the entire 64th, 65th, and 66th floors suddenly flickered, synching simultaneously to the live audio-video feed transmitted directly from the camera Claire had concealed on her lapel.

Downstairs on the 64th floor, thirty members of the Vance Global Logistics Board of Directors—men and women holding trillions in collective capital—froze in their high-backed leather chairs as the wall-sized presentation displays cut from corporate stock graphs to the live scene playing out in the penthouse above them.

Walter Vance’s voice blasted through the state-of-the-art surround-sound speakers across three entire floors:

*“...Julianna has a tragic, fatal relapse from the sedatives... The trust passes to you unconditionally at midnight... By tomorrow morning, both Julianna and Elena will be tragic memories, and our empire will be secure.”*

Upstairs in the penthouse, Walter’s head snapped toward the wall speakers. The color drained from his face for the first time in his life.

"What is that?" Walter roared. "Briggs! Shut that damn system off!"

"It’s not internal, sir!" Briggs shouted, tapping frantically at his tactical earpiece. "It’s broadcasting over the public building network! It’s streaming to the board room downstairs! It’s streaming to the press affiliates!"

"Cut the power! Cut the whole damn grid!" Adrian shrieked, clutching his head in sheer hysteria. "They're watching us! The board is watching us!"

"They sure are, Adrian," I said, stepping through the staircase doors and out into the open light of the penthouse.

Walter, Adrian, the doctor, and Briggs all spun around in unison.

I stood at the top of the short landing, stripped of my bridal pretensions, clad in the black utility coveralls, my face smeared with cake sugar and dirt, holding the silver phone high in the air. Claire stepped out right beside me, her weapon leveled dead at Walter Vance’s heart.

"Elena," Adrian gasped, taking an involuntary step forward. "Elena, baby, listen to me—"

"Shut your mouth, Adrian," I snapped, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the massive room. "You shoved my face into a wedding cake because you thought I was a frightened little girl you could bully into submission. You thought I’d let you murder me for an inheritance."

"Briggs," Walter commanded, his voice trembling with a deadly, quiet fury. "Kill them both. Right now."

Briggs raised his assault rifle, his finger tightening on the trigger.

*Bang!*

A gunshot echoed through the room—not from Claire’s weapon, but from behind Briggs.

Leo Vance stood in the elevator doorway at the far end of the penthouse, holding a heavy chrome revolver he had taken from Walter’s private study safe. Smoke curled from the barrel.

Briggs staggered forward, dropping his weapon with a wet gasp, clutching his right shoulder where the bullet had shattered his collarbone. He collapsed heavily against the marble floor, groaning in agony.

"Leo?" Adrian stared at his younger brother in sheer disbelief. "You shot Briggs?"

"I should have shot you two years ago," Leo said, his voice shaking with a mixture of terror and fierce resolution, keeping the revolver pointed directly at his older brother. "Step away from the couch, Adrian. Step away from Julianna."

Walter Vance didn't look at his sons. His eyes remained locked on me, blazing with an ancient, predatory hatred.

He glanced down at the grandfather clock standing in the corner of the room. The polished brass pendulum swung with slow, rhythmic indifference.

The hands read **11:48 PM.**

Twelve minutes until midnight.

"You think you’ve won, Elena?" Walter whispered, slowly slipping his hand inside his tailored tuxedo jacket. "You think a few horrified board members and a leaked audio feed change the law? Grandfather’s trust requires a signed marriage certificate and an heir alive at midnight. As long as Adrian is breathing, and as long as I have this—"

Walter whipped out a small, nickel-plated derringer from his inner pocket, aiming it directly at my forehead.
