Chapter 6 - The Police Trap

Megan’s breathing was shallow and rapid. Her chest heaved against her designer blouse, her eyes darting frantically toward the door.
“It’s deepfake!” Megan stammered, her voice pitching up into a hysterical screech. “She used artificial intelligence! You can make anything with computers now! Detective, you can’t believe this! She’s trying to frame me because she’s jealous of my relationship with Mom!”
“Shut up, Megan!” Evelyn snapped, her composure finally shattering into jagged shards of panic.
Evelyn turned to the detective, her hands trembling as she tried to smooth her hair. “Detective Rodriguez, this… this is a misunderstanding. A terrible, tragic family misunderstanding. Megan didn't push her; she tripped and tried to grab Clara to steady herself! And I… I was in shock! I didn't know what I was saying!”
“You told the paramedics Clara threw herself down the stairs to kill her baby, Mrs. Vance,” Rodriguez said, his voice flat and lethal. “You filed a false police report. You submitted forged medical journals. And that video clearly shows your daughter kicking an emergency communication device away from a dying woman.”
Rodriguez reached for his shoulder radio. “Dispatch, this is Unit 4-Charlie. I need two backup units to County Memorial, fifth-floor maternity ward. I have two suspects for felony assault and attempted murder.”
Megan let out a strangled shriek. Before Rodriguez could finish his radio transmission, she lunged toward the rolling tray table, trying to smash Chloe’s laptop onto the floor.
“I won’t let you ruin my life!” Megan screamed.
Mark reacted instantly. He stepped in front of the table, grabbing Megan’s wrists in an iron grip and shoving her back against the wall. “Don’t you touch that! Don’t you ever touch anything belonging to my family again!”
“Get off me, you piece of trash!” Megan spit, clawing at his arms.
Rodriguez drew his handcuffs, moving quickly to pin Megan against the wall. “Megan Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, assault resulting in severe bodily injury, and tampering with evidence.”
“Mom! Do something!” Megan wailed as the cold steel ratcheted tightly around her wrists. “Call Judge Harrison! Call the governor! Mom!”
Evelyn, however, didn't move to help her daughter.
Instead, Evelyn took two slow steps backward toward the exit, her eyes wide, cold, and calculating. In that moment of sheer survival, the matriarch’s true nature laid bare: she was ready to throw her own golden child into the meat grinder to save her own skin.
“Officer,” Evelyn whispered, her voice shaking with fake horror. “I didn't know. I swear on my life, I didn't know Megan pushed her. I was in the dining room! When I came out, Megan told me Clara jumped! I was only trying to protect our family from scandal! Megan manipulated me!”
Megan froze against the wall, her tear-stained face turning slowly toward our mother. “What? Mom! You told me to push her! You said if the baby was born, we’d lose the house! You bought the burner phone to contact the insurance agent!”
“Lies!” Evelyn hissed, backing toward the doorway. “She’s insane! She’s trying to drag me down with her!”
“Evelyn Vance,” Arthur Vance said loudly, stepping between her and the hallway. “Don’t bother running. While Detective Rodriguez was reviewing the video, federal investigators from the SEC and the state fraud division were executing a search warrant at your estate.”
Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks. “What?”
“Did you really think I wouldn't audit the trust accounts after Thomas died?” Arthur continued, pulling a stack of legal documents with red Department of Justice seals from his briefcase. “You embezzled one point eight million dollars from the family trust to cover your personal debts. When that collapsed, you orchestrated a fraudulent two-million-dollar life insurance policy on your pregnant daughter.”
Arthur stepped closer to Evelyn, his eyes burning with righteous fury. “The insurance broker you bribed? He was arrested two hours ago. He rolled on you in five minutes. He gave the district attorney every email, every text message, and the audio recording of you offering him twenty-five thousand dollars to backdate Clara’s policy.”
The blood drained from Evelyn’s lips. She swayed on her feet, clutching her chest as if suffering a coronary.
“You’re finished, Evelyn,” Arthur said softly. “You and Megan are going to prison for a very, very long time.”
Sirens wailed in the streets below the hospital windows. Heavy footsteps echoed down the tiled corridor outside. Three more uniformed officers burst through the doors, followed by an assistant district attorney holding a warrant folder.
“Evelyn Vance?” the lead officer asked.
Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, but only a dry, choking gasp came out.
“Hands behind your back, ma'am. You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny.”
As the handcuffs clicked around Evelyn’s manicured wrists, Megan began to laugh. It was a shrill, hysterical, broken sound that echoed off the sterile hospital walls.

“We’re finished,” Megan giggled through her tears, looking at her mother with pure hatred. “Just like I told you, Mom. We’re finished.”
