Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

"Maya, listen to reason!" Eleanor stepped forward, attempting to grab my hand across the table. Her voice was shaking, a mixture of panic, anger, and the desperate instinct of a woman watching her entire empire of lies crumble into ash. "I am your mother! You cannot do this to me! You cannot let your own mother be thrown into the street!"

I pulled my hand back before she could touch me.

"Marcus," I said, without looking away from Eleanor. "Show them the default notices."

Marcus opened a second folder and slid three crisp, white documents across the table.

"Notice of immediate acceleration on the mezzanine note for forty-four Willow Lane—that’s your home, Mrs. Hayes," Marcus stated with bureaucratic precision. "Notice of lease termination for the Oakridge property—effective Friday at 5:00 PM. And a formal notification of criminal referral to the State Attorney General’s financial crimes division regarding fifteen counts of forged construction lien waivers submitted by Sterling Enterprises."

Richard let out a strangled sob, burying his face in his hands.

"Forged waivers?" Vanessa whispered, her eyes wide as she looked down at her husband crumpled on the floor. "Richard... what did you do?"

"He forged the subcontractor sign-offs to draw down bank funds early, Vanessa," Marcus explained coolly. "He took money intended to pay plumbers, electricians, and framers, and used it to pay the monthly lease on your luxury vehicles and your country-club membership dues. When the subcontractors threatened to sue, he took out another predatory loan against your mother’s house to pay them hush money."

Vanessa stared at Richard as if she were seeing a stranger for the first time in her life. The illusion of the dashing, wealthy real-estate developer she had bragged about for a decade had shattered into a million jagged pieces.

"You lied to me," Vanessa choked out, tears streaming down her face. "You told me we were rich! You told me we were set for life!"

"We were going to be!" Richard cried out, looking up from the floor. "If the Westside Marina deal had cleared, I would have made five million dollars! I just needed more time! Maya, please! Give me ninety days! Just ninety days to close the marina project!"

"The Westside Marina project has already been canceled, Richard," I said plainly.

Richard froze. "What?"

"Riverside Capital purchased the municipal bond rights for the marina waterfront three weeks ago," I told him. "We terminated your development contract yesterday at 4:30 PM for material breach of safety protocols and financial insolvency. The contract has already been awarded to an independent contractor who actually pays their workers on time."

Richard collapsed completely, slumping against the legs of the conference chairs, weeping uncontrollably.

Eleanor stood stiffly, her chest heaving. When she realized that begging wouldn't work, her face twisted back into that familiar, bitter sneer that had terrorized my childhood.

"You ungrateful little monster," Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling with venom. "You think you’re so smart, don't you? You think because you have money now, you’re better than us? You’re still the same awkward, pathetic little girl who couldn't keep a husband! You’re still the black sheep of this family!"

"If being the black sheep means I don't raise my daughter to be a cruel, narcissistic bully," I replied evenly, "then I wear that title with pride."

"I raised you!" Eleanor shouted, pounding her fist on the table. "I gave you life! You owe me everything! Without me, you wouldn't even exist! You are legally and morally obligated to provide for your mother!"

"I owe you nothing, Eleanor," I said, stepping right up to the edge of the table until I was mere inches from her face. "You took Dad’s life insurance. You took my dignity. You allowed Vanessa to treat me like a servant for ten years, and worse than that, you allowed Emma to spit on my daughter’s heart."

I leaned in, my voice dropping to a whisper that sent a visible shiver down Eleanor’s spine.

"A mother protects her child. You never protected me. But I will move heaven and earth to protect Lily. And today, I am removing every single one of you from her life forever."

"Maya, please!" Vanessa suddenly dropped to her knees beside Richard, crawling forward until she reached the hem of my suit pants. She reached out, her hands shaking, trying to grasp my ankles. "I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! I’ll do anything! I’ll apologize to Lily on my knees! I’ll make Emma apologize in front of her whole school! Just don't take our house! Emma has her friends there! Her whole life is in Oakridge! Where will we go?!"

I looked down at my sister.

For years, I had dreamed of this moment—the moment when the sister who had stepped on my neck would finally see who I really was. But looking at her now, kneeling on the floor, weeping and covered in mascara, I didn't feel triumph.

I only felt pity.

"You'll go wherever people go when they have to live within their means, Vanessa," I said quietly. "You told Lily that she needed to learn where she belongs in the world. Now, it’s time for you and Emma to learn the same lesson."

I turned to Marcus.

"Escort them out. If they refuse to leave, call building security."

"Right away, Maya," Marcus said, gesturing toward the doors where two large security guards immediately stepped inside.

"Maya! No! Maya!" Vanessa screamed as the guards gently but firmly hauled Richard to his feet and guided them toward the exit.

Eleanor didn't scream anymore. She stood there, trembling with a fury so potent it made her teeth chatter.

"You will burn in hell for this, Maya," Eleanor whispered, her eyes filled with hate. "Mark my words. You will end up completely alone."

I looked at my mother, holding my head high.

May you like

"I’m not alone, Eleanor," I replied softly. "I have Lily. And unlike you... she will never have to buy her family’s love."
