Chapter 9 - Reclaiming Claire

By summer, I had enrolled in classes to finish my degree in interior architecture—a passion I had abandoned seven years earlier because Richard deemed it a "frivolous hobby" that didn't fit his schedule.

Sitting in a lecture hall surrounded by students half my age, I felt a familiar pang of self-doubt whisper in the back of my mind. You're too old. You're out of practice. You don't belong here.

Then I remembered the sound of Emily crying in the dark bathroom, and the cold silence of my parents' dining room on Christmas Eve. Those memories were no longer chains; they were armor.

When grades were posted at the end of the term, I had earned straight A’s. I framed my first design portfolio project and hung it proudly in my home office.

My relationship with Evelyn had grown into something rare and profound—not just an alliance of circumstance, but a genuine bond of mutual respect. She adored Emily, spoiling her with books and paint sets rather than superficial luxury items. Together, we had dismantled a gilded cage and built something real from the ruins.

I learned to manage my own bank accounts, pay my own insurance, and make decisions without rehearsing every sentence in my head to see how it might trigger someone else's anger. The constant, low-grade hum of anxiety that had defined my marriage slowly dissolved, replaced by a quiet, unshakable confidence.
