Chapter 3 - The Arrival of the Authorities

Rachel let out a blood-curdling shriek as the 911 operator began taking down the details. She threw herself at Daniel, trying to grab the phone out of his hand, but he pushed her away with an iron arm, holding his ground near the front doorway.

"Daniel, stop! Are you out of your mind?!" Rachel screamed, tears finally ruining her pristine makeup. "They're going to arrest me! What about Noah?! What about our family?!"

"You didn't give a damn about this family when you pushed my crippled sister into a cake to hide your stealing!" Daniel spat back, his voice dead of any affection. "You're lucky I don't drag you out to the squad car myself."

Dad looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally among our relatives. "Aunt Beatrice... Martha... speak to him! You know me! I built this family! You know I wouldn't steal from my own daughter!"

Aunt Beatrice, Dad’s own elder sister, stepped forward, her face twisted in utter revulsion. She looked at the frosting smeared all over my trembling body, then at Dad. "I watched you rip that crutch out of Emma's hand, Arthur. I watched you let her drop like trash. You are a monster. I hope they lock you up and throw away the key."

The rest of the guests began backing toward the front door, muttering in hushed, disgusted tones. Nobody wanted to be associated with what was about to happen. Within five minutes, every single guest had fled the house, leaving only the five of us—me, Daniel, Noah, Dad, and Rachel—standing in the ruined living room amidst pink frosting and shattered glass.

Outside, the faint wail of police sirens began to echo through the neighborhood, growing louder with every passing second.

Dad's arrogant composure completely disintegrated. He sank into his armchair, burying his face in his hands. "Emma... please," he wept, looking up at me through red-rimmed eyes. "I'm your father. You can't let them put me in prison. I’m sixty-two years old! I won't survive it!"

I leaned heavily on my crutch, looking down at the man who had raised me. For my entire life, Arthur Vance had been an imposing figure—a man who demanded absolute obedience, who made us feel like we were constantly owing him for our existence. But standing here now, covered in his lies, he just looked small, pathetic, and hollow.

"You let me think I was a burden, Dad," I said, my voice cold and steady. "You let me sit in my tiny room every night thinking I was worthless because I couldn't pay my medical bills. You didn't care if I survived."

"I was going to give it back!" he lied desperately. "Once Rachel's store made a profit—"

"Shut up, Arthur," Daniel growled. "Just save it for the officers."

Red and blue lights began flashing through the front window blinds, casting a eerie strobe across the room. Two police cruisers pulled into the driveway, their tires crunching over the packed snow.

Daniel opened the front door, inviting the two uniform officers inside. A tall, sharp-eyed officer named Patrolman Miller stepped over the broken vase, taking in the scene instantly.

"Who called 911?" Miller asked, his hand resting casually near his belt.

"I did," Daniel stepped forward. "My name is Daniel Vance. My sister, Emma Vance, is the victim here."

Officer Miller looked at me—covered in pink frosting, standing on one leg with a crutch, shivering from shock. He then looked at the white tablet Daniel was holding out.

"We have video and audio evidence of financial theft totaling two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, power of attorney fraud, and a recorded physical assault that happened less than fifteen minutes ago," Daniel explained methodically.

Rachel rushed toward the officer, her voice trembling with theatrical panic. "Officer, you have to listen to me! My husband is having a mental breakdown! My sister-in-law fell because she's clumsy on her crutches, and now they're trying to frame me and my father-in-law!"

Officer Miller raised a hand. "Ma'am, step back and be quiet. We're going to review the evidence."

Daniel handed over the tablet, hitting play on the video Noah had recorded. The two officers stood side-by-side in the entryway, listening to Dad and Rachel plot to ruin my reputation and steal my insurance payout. As the audio played, Officer Miller's face hardened into a mask of pure professional distaste.

He looked up from the screen, his gaze locking directly onto my father.

"Mr. Arthur Vance?" Miller asked.

Dad didn't answer. He just sat frozen in his chair.

"Sir, stand up and put your hands behind your back," Miller ordered, unhooking the handcuffs from his utility belt.

"No! You can't do this!" Rachel shrieked, backing toward the hallway. "I didn't do anything!"

The second officer stepped past Daniel and blocked her path. "Ma'am, you're being detained for questioning regarding grand larceny and third-degree assault. Keep your hands where we can see them."

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around my father's wrists, he looked up at me one last time, his eyes wide with a mix of shock and fury. "Emma... you're destroying this family!"

"No, Dad," I replied, watching as they pulled him out of his armchair. "You destroyed it the day you decided my pain was worth two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
