Chapter 3 - THE PARALYTIC MASK FALLS

The heavy brass gears groaned as the motorized red velvet curtain began to retract, sliding smoothly across the overhead steel track.

Vivien turned, expecting perhaps an ice sculpture, a framed deed, or a string quartet.

The color drained from her skin so fast it looked as though someone had pulled a plug on her lifeblood.

Behind the curtain sat no celebratory display.

Resting in the center of the raised platform was a sterile, stainless-steel medical transport gurney. Mother lay upon it, propped up at a thirty-degree angle, hooked to a portable diagnostic monitor. Her silver hair was brushed back, her pale skin illuminated by the unforgiving glare of the overhead stage spots.

And standing over her, frozen in mid-stride, was Dr. Julian Vance.

Julian’s face was chalk-white. His hands were raised in the air, trembling violently, held at gunpoint by two plainclothes Scotland Yard detectives whose tactical vests were starkly visible under unbuttoned jackets.

A collective gasp ripped through the four hundred guests in the ballroom. Champagne flutes clattered against crystal tables. The photographers froze, lenses pointed in stunned horror.

"What... what is this?" Vivien stammered, stepping toward me, her voice dropping into a desperate, frantic hiss. "Lorenzo, have you lost your mind? Your mother is critically ill! Exposing her to this light, this crowd—you’re going to kill her!"

She pivoted toward the audience, instantly trying to recapture the narrative, her hands flying to her cheeks in performative agony.

"Someone call an ambulance! Lorenzo has had a psychotic break! He’s endangering his own mother!"

"Silence her microphone," I commanded quietly into my lapel.

With a sharp *click*, Vivien’s stage mic cut out.

Behind us, a massive 20-foot projection screen dropped from the ballroom ceiling with a thundering thud. The projector hummed to life, casting blinding blue light over the entire hall.

The image that materialized wasn't a wedding slideshow.

It was an ultra-high-resolution scan of a certified laboratory toxicology report bearing the official stamp of St. Thomas’s Hospital Pathology Unit, dated 7:14 PM this evening.

"For ninety days," my voice rang through the ballroom speakers, cold and resonant as a funeral bell, "Lady Isabella Blackwood has been subjected to daily intravenous injections of Tubocurarine-C, an unlicensed neuromuscular blocking agent."

Murmurs exploded across the floor. Lord Sterling leaned forward, his monocle dangling, staring at the screen in disbelief.

"A paralytic," I said, stepping between Vivien and the front edge of the stage. "A drug used in capital executions and deep surgical anesthesia. It leaves the patient fully conscious. It leaves the central nervous system completely intact. It preserves every sensation of pain, fear, and cold. But it destroys voluntary motor function."

I turned slowly to face Vivien. She was backed against the edge of the podium, her knuckles pressed against her lips, her seafoam eyes darting frantically toward the ballroom exits.

Standing at every double door were two private security guards in charcoal suits, arms folded, blocking the brass handles.

"My mother was not dying of progressive brain damage, Vivien," I whispered, though the podium mic carried every syllable to the farthest corners of the room. "She was trapped inside her own skin. She watched you eat lunch in her room. She heard you discuss her funeral arrangements with your dressmaker. She felt you pin her down and force synthetic venom into her veins."

"Julian!" Vivien shrieked, breaking character, pointing a shaking, diamond-clad finger at the physician. "Julian, tell them! Tell them you prescribed it! You told me it was an experimental neuro-stimulant! Lorenzo, he lied to me! He manipulated us both!"

Dr. Julian Vance let out a ragged, hysterical laugh from behind the gurney. The handcuffs clinked on his wrists as the detective pushed him a step forward.

"Don't you dare throw me under the bus, you psychotic bitch!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking across the silent hall. "You promised me two million pounds from the offshore escrow! You told me if I didn't up the dosage this week so she couldn't blink during the notary signing, you’d leak my medical board infractions to the press!"

The ballroom erupted. Shouts of outrage echoed from the society matriarchs who had kissed Vivien's cheek only thirty minutes prior.

Vivien lunged toward the stage stairs.

"Nobody touches that woman," a voice rang out.

It didn't come from me. It didn't come from Julian.

It came from the gurney.

The voice was faint, raspy, scraping through vocal cords that had been starved of use for three agonizing months, but it carried the unmistakable, terrifying authority of Lady Isabella Blackwood.

Mother had lifted her right arm. The binding agent had begun to flush from her bloodstream twenty minutes ago.

Her index finger pointed directly at Vivien's face.

"You forgot one detail, darling," Mother croaked, her eyes burning like twin stars of cold fury. "I was listening... when you called your Cayman banker... from my bathroom."
