Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of black ties, diamonds, and whispering serpents.

Every major crime boss, corrupt politician, and billionaire in the Midwest was present. At the center of the room stood Donald Hayes—a silver-haired, hawk-nosed patriarch surrounded by his bodyguards. He was checking his gold watch every few seconds, his face tight with growing anxiety. He had not heard from his daughter in nearly twenty-four hours.

Suddenly, the double doors of the ballroom swung wide.

The brass orchestra stuttered and stopped.

Dominic Whitmore entered.

He sat tall in his polished black wheelchair, radiating an aura of lethal supremacy that instantly cleared a fifteen-foot path through the crowd. But what caused an audible wave of gasps was not Dominic.

It was me.

I walked beside his chair, my hand resting proudly on his shoulder, the emerald silk of my dress rustling softly against the marble floor. The enormous diamond on my finger caught the light of three dozen crystal chandeliers.

Donald Hayes shoved his way through his circle of associates, his face flushing crimson.

“Whitmore!” Hayes barked, trying to sound authoritative despite the sweat beading on his forehead. “What is the meaning of this? Where is Victoria? Why wasn't she at the family estate this afternoon?”

Dominic rolled forward until he was three feet from the older mob boss. The tension in the ballroom was so thick people stopped breathing.

“Your daughter is currently resting,” Dominic replied, his voice calm, smooth, and utterly terrifying. “In my private holding facility.”

Hayes gasped. “You dare touch my daughter? On what grounds?”

Dominic signaled with a flick of his wrist.

High above the ballroom, the massive digital displays—usually reserved for displaying charity donors and auction lots—flickered.

Instantly, the crystal-clear security footage from the pool played across all four screens.

The crowd erupted into shocked whispers. The video showed Victoria’s bodyguard tampering with Dominic’s chair. It showed Victoria holding the remote detonator. It showed the chair plunging into the deep end.

And then, it showed me.

The room watched in stunned silence as I dove into the depths, frantically tearing the aircraft wire free, dragging Dominic to the surface, and forcing the breath back into his lungs.

“My God,” a senator whispered near the bar.

Donald Hayes stumbled back, looking around wildly. “This is a fabrication! An AI deepfake! You’re framing my family to steal our docks!”

Dominic leaned forward in his chair, his eyes devoid of mercy.

“The Chicago Police Commissioner and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have already received the uncompressed source files,” Dominic stated calmly. “Along with seven years of your family’s offshore wire transfers to Sicilian hit squads—including the hit on the Dan Ryan Expressway that put me in this chair two years ago.”

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Dominic Whitmore had just publicly exposed the truth behind his disability. Hayes hadn't just tried to drown him; Hayes had ordered the car bomb that crippled him.

“You’re finished, Donald,” Dominic said softly. “Your accounts are frozen. Your lieutenants have already surrendered your warehouses. By midnight, the Hayes name will cease to exist in this city.”

Hayes looked at his bodyguards, his eyes wild with desperation. “Kill him! Shoot him now!”

None of his men moved.

Instead, Dominic’s chief enforcer, Frank, stepped from behind Hayes, sliding the cold muzzle of a silenced pistol against the back of Hayes’s neck.

“Walk quietly, Mr. Hayes,” Frank whispered. “The federal marshals are waiting at the service entrance.”

Two federal agents in plainclothes moved forward, slipping cuffs onto Hayes’s wrists while the room stood frozen.

Dominic turned his chair toward the center of the grand ballroom, his powerful voice cutting through the stunned silence.

“Ladies and gentlemen, forgive the interruption,” Dominic announced, his gaze sweeping over the city’s elite. “The Hayes engagement is formally dissolved.”

He reached up, taking my trembling hand in his, raising it for the entire room to see the flashing six-carat emerald diamond.

“Allow me to introduce my true fiancée. Lily Carter. The future queen of Chicago.”

Applause broke out—hesitant at first, then swelling into a thunderous, deafening ovation.

Beside me, Dominic’s gray eyes looked up into mine. For the first time, behind the terrifying mask of the mafia sovereign, I saw pure, unadulterated devotion.
