Chapter 7 - The Ambush in Austin

Kenneth Brennan did not take the bus. He had two thousand dollars left in his emergency savings account—the only money Axiom couldn't touch.
Instead of paying the county tax collector, Kenneth purchased two one-way plane tickets to Austin, Texas. He drove to Tyler’s rundown apartment complex in Indianapolis, dragged his humiliated, defeated son into a cheap rental sedan, and forced him to fly south.
In Kenneth’s twisted worldview, Lucia was still the vulnerable, quiet girl who used to cry in her bedroom when he criticized her report cards. He believed that if he confronted her face-to-face, in front of her employees, her maternal guilt and daughterly shame would force her to capitulate.
At nine o’clock on a Friday morning, Kenneth and Tyler walked through the sliding glass doors of the Axiom Dynamics headquarters in downtown Austin.
The lobby was breathtaking. Polished terrazzo floors stretched toward a soaring forty-foot glass atrium. Security guards in crisp black suits stood behind a curved marble reception desk, while dozens of sharply dressed software engineers and corporate executives moved with quiet, focused purpose.
Kenneth felt a knot tighten in his gut, but he masked it with an aggressive scowl. Tyler, pale and shivering with anxiety, kept his head down, desperately wishing he were anywhere else on earth.
Kenneth marched up to the security desk and slammed his palm onto the marble. "I’m here to see Lucia Brennan. Right now."
The receptionist, an elegant young woman wearing a headset, looked up with professional serenity. "Do you have an appointment, sir?"
"I don't need an appointment. I’m her father. Kenneth Brennan. And this is her brother. Tell her we’re here to settle this family business."
The receptionist’s eyes flicked to a hidden screen beneath the desk. A subtle alarm had clearly registered; Marcus Vance had placed Kenneth and Tyler on Axiom’s high-risk visitor watch list ten days prior.
"Please take a seat in the lounge area, Mr. Brennan," she said calmly, pressing a silent notification button. "I will contact executive operations."
Kenneth smirked at Tyler. "See that? You just have to show authority. She’ll come crawling down here in five minutes."
Ten minutes later, the elevator doors slid open.
It was not Lucia who stepped out.
Marcus Vance and Evelyn Wright walked across the lobby, flanked by two towering corporate security officers.
Kenneth stood up, his scowl deepening. "Where is Lucia? I didn't come to Texas to talk to hired help."
"Mr. Brennan," Marcus said, his voice flat and authoritative. "My name is Marcus Vance. I am Chief Financial Officer of Axiom Dynamics. This is Evelyn Wright, lead counsel. If you take one step toward the secure elevator bank, these officers will have you detained for criminal trespass."
"You can't trespass a man from his daughter’s company!" Kenneth blustered, stepping forward aggressively.
"We can, and we will," Evelyn said, her voice like steel. "However, Ms. Brennan has agreed to grant you exactly ten minutes in the primary conference room on the concourse level. Under one condition: your bags stay with security, and you conduct yourself with decorum."
Tyler grabbed his father’s sleeve. "Dad, please. Let's just listen to what they have to say."
Kenneth jerked his arm away, grunting in disgust, but followed Marcus into an executive conference room enclosed by smart-tinted glass.
As soon as the heavy acoustic door clicked shut, the glass frosted over, cutting off the view of the lobby.
The side door opened.
Lucia walked in.
She wore an impeccably tailored navy suit, her hair pulled back into an elegant knot. Her posture was commanding, her expression completely unreadable. In her hands, she carried a slim black tablet.
She did not smile. She did not offer a hug. She took a seat at the head of the long conference table, gesturing for Marcus and Evelyn to sit beside her.
Kenneth stared at her. For the first time in his life, he saw no trace of the little girl who used to seek his approval. He saw a powerful, self-possessed woman who controlled an empire.
"You have eight minutes, Kenneth," Lucia said, her voice remarkably calm. "Why are you here?"
Kenneth swallowed hard, trying to summon his usual thunder. "Why am I here? You’re trying to throw your mother and father out onto the street! You repossessed my car! You froze your brother's business! You’re acting like a cold-blooded monster, Lucia!"
"Your mother is currently in Chicago, Kenneth," Lucia replied coolly, glancing at her tablet. "She called me two days ago. She apologized to Ellie. She apologized to me. I sent her a plane ticket to Austin, and she will be living in a private guest house on my estate starting next week."
Kenneth’s jaw dropped. "Joanne... called you?"
"She did," Lucia said. "She finally realized that forty years of enabling your cruelty had cost her everything. So Mom is taken care of. You, on the other hand, have twenty days left before the sheriff locks your doors."
Tyler suddenly dropped to his knees beside the conference table, tears streaming down his face. "Lucia! Please! I’m begging you! I’m sorry! I shouldn't have laughed at dinner! I was an idiot! The banks are going to garnish my wages for the rest of my life! The repo guys took everything! Please don't put me in prison!"
Kenneth looked down at his son with disgust. "Get up, Tyler! Don't grovel to her!"
"Shut up, Dad!" Tyler screamed, his face red and snot-stained. "Just shut up! Your stupid pride ruined my life! I don't care about your pride anymore! I just want my life back!"
Lucia looked at her brother. There was no joy in her eyes, only a profound, tragic pity.
"Stand up, Tyler," Lucia said softly.
Tyler scrambled back to his feet, trembling, wiping his face with the sleeves of his cheap jacket.
"You won't go to prison, Tyler," Lucia said.
Tyler let out a ragged gasp of relief. "I won't?"
"Axiom will absorb the ninety-two thousand dollars in unauthorized charges as a corporate operational loss," Lucia stated. "On two conditions. First: you sign a comprehensive non-disclosure and release agreement, permanently waiving any claim to any asset, trust, or business associated with me or Axiom Dynamics. Second: you get a job. A real job. Marcus has arranged an interview for you as an entry-level logistics clerk at a regional warehouse in Evansville. Twelve hours a day, forty hours a week, twenty-two dollars an hour. You will pay your own rent. You will buy your own groceries. You will learn what an honest dollar feels like."
Tyler swallowed hard, nodding furiously. "I'll take it. I'll take it, Lucia. Thank you. Thank you."
Kenneth looked between them, his face purple with rage. "And what about me?! What about my house?!"
Lucia stood up. She walked around the table until she was standing three feet from her father.
May you like
"You don't have a house, Kenneth. You never did."
