Chapter 3 - The Cracks in the Mirror

Emily stood frozen in the doorway of the hospital room, looking between the fractured groups. The air in the room was suffocating.

"Mom," Emily whispered again, taking a hesitant step forward. Her eyes were fixed entirely on my bandaged hand. "They... the nurse at the front desk told me you were in here. She said you were the one on the news broadcast. She said you saved Caleb."

Before I could answer, Tom stepped between us, physically inserting his broad frame into Emily's line of sight.

"Emily, sweetheart, don't overwhelm your aunt," Tom said smoothly, his tone shifting into that fatherly, authoritative cadence he always used to control a room. "Tonight has been extremely chaotic for everyone. Emotions are running high. David and Melissa are in shock, and your mother is obviously trying to turn an unfortunate coincidence into a personal spotlight."

"A personal spotlight?" Nathan snapped, stepping right up to Tom’s shoulder. "Are you out of your mind, Tom?"

"Nathan, stay out of this," Tom barked, dropping his calm demeanor for a split second, his eyes flashing with irritation. "This is between our family. You’ve been whispering in Emily's ear all night, stirring up drama when we should be focused on Melissa."

"I am Melissa's husband!" David roared, slamming his open palm against the bedside table. A plastic cup of water rattled violently. "And you will shut your damn mouth in this room, Tom!"

The hallway outside fell silent. A passing nurse poked her head into the room, warning them about the noise level, but David didn't back down. He pointed a thick, calloused finger directly at Lauren.

"You told my wife that Rebecca was a monster who tried to bankrupt Emily," David said, his chest heaving with fury. "You told my mother at Thanksgiving dinner that Rebecca had a secret drinking problem and that’s why she missed Emily's bridal shower. My mother cried for Emily, Lauren! She gave you five thousand dollars from her retirement check to 'help Emily pay off debts Rebecca caused'!"

Emily’s head snapped toward David, her face going stark white. "What? Uncle David, what are you talking about? Aunt Clara gave that money to Dad for my wedding photographer!"

David turned his fiery glare toward Tom. "Did she, Emily? Because my mother told me she gave it directly to Lauren to replace funds Rebecca allegedly stole from your savings account!"

Lauren stepped back, her hand flying to her throat. "That was a private misunderstanding! Clara offered that money out of the goodness of her heart because she knew how much financial strain Tom was under after the divorce!"

"What financial strain, Lauren?" I said, standing up from my chair for the first time.

My voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. The entire room went dead silent.

I walked slowly past David, stopping three feet from where Tom and Lauren stood huddled together.

"I walked away from twenty-four years of marriage with half the equity in a house we bought thirty years ago," I said, looking Tom dead in the eye. "I let you keep the boat. I let you keep the investment portfolio. I didn't ask for a single penny of alimony, Tom. Not one dime. Do you know why?"

Tom’s jaw worked silently, but no words came out. His eyes darted toward the hospital door, looking for an exit.

"I didn't take alimony because you looked me in the eyes in mediation and swore that every spare dollar you had would go into a dedicated fund for Emily’s future," I continued, my voice steady, cutting through the sterile room like a razor. "I took extra shifts at the firm every Saturday for three years to pay off the rest of her student loans so she wouldn't start her marriage under a mountain of debt. And you let your new wife tell everyone in this town that I was a deadbeat who abandoned my child?"

"Mom..." Emily choked out, stumbling forward, her face completely drained of color. "Mom, Dad told me... Dad said you cashed out my college trust fund right before the divorce was finalized. He showed me a bank statement showing the account was empty!"

"He showed you an empty account, Emily," I said softly, turning my gaze to my daughter, "because he was the one who emptied it."

"That's enough!" Lauren shrieked, her composed mask completely shattering. Her voice took on a sharp, hysterical edge. "This is ridiculous! We came here out of concern for my sister, and Rebecca is turning this into an attack on our marriage! Tom, we are leaving. Melissa, we’ll come back tomorrow when people have regained their sanity."

"Don't bother coming back tomorrow, Lauren," Melissa said from the bed. Her voice was ice-cold. "In fact, don't bother coming to our house for New Year's either. Take your husband and get out."

Lauren stared at her younger sister in absolute disbelief. "Melissa! I am your sister! How can you take her side over mine? She’s an outsider!"

"That outsider stood in three inches of slush holding Caleb while he screamed for his life," Melissa whispered, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "Where were you, Lauren? You were on your third glass of Pinot Noir, making fun of the cheap Christmas card Rebecca sent Emily last week."

Lauren’s eyes flared with pure hatred. She grabbed Tom’s arm, pulling him toward the door. "Tom, let's go. They’ve clearly poisoned their own minds."

Tom didn't look at Melissa. He didn't look at David. But as he turned to leave, his eyes caught Emily’s.

"Emily," Tom said, his tone desperate, trying one last time to pull the strings of guilt he had spent twenty-two years perfecting. "Are you coming with us? Or are you going to stand there and let them disrespect your father?"

Emily stood frozen between her father and the mother she had cast aside four hours ago in a grocery store. Nathan walked up beside Emily, gently placing his hand on the small of her back, offering support without forcing her hand.

Emily looked at Tom’s immaculate coat, then down at the floor, and finally up into my eyes. She saw the exhaustion etched into my skin, the mud dried against the hems of my jeans, the gauze wrapped tightly around my bleeding knuckles.

"No, Dad," Emily whispered, her voice trembling but clear. "I’m staying here."

Tom’s face tightened into an ugly, bitter scowl. "Fine. If you choose her tonight, Emily, don't expect me to be there when your life falls apart."

Without another word, Tom turned on his heel and strode down the hospital corridor, Lauren clacking rapidly beside him in her high-heeled boots.

The door clicked shut behind them.

Emily dropped her face into her hands and collapsed into a chair, sobbing uncontrollably.
