Chapter 7 - The Moment at the Tree

The Drake Hotel’s grand ballroom smelled of roasted chestnuts, pine needles, and expensive perfume. Beneath the dazzling glare of three crystal chandeliers, a crowd of two hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest elite parted like the Red Sea as Damen Valente walked his party toward the Santa display.

Damen kept a vigilant eye on the perimeter. Cosmo and Tiny were stationed near the exits, their tailored suits doing little to conceal their tactical readiness. But Damen’s focus remained on the children.

Chloe was practically vibrating with excitement, bouncing on her patent-leather shoes, dragging Oliver by the wrist. Oliver, usually terrified of crowds and bright lights, was surprisingly anchored. He held Chloe’s hand with his right fingers, his left arm tucking Dasher securely against his ribs.

“Careful, sweetheart,” Emily cautioned softly, walking alongside them, her emerald dress rustling against the polished marble floor. She felt the heavy gazes of society women piercing through her, but whenever she felt self-conscious, the warm, steady weight of Damen’s hand on the small of her back made her spine straighten.

“Ignore them,” Damen murmured near her ear, his warm breath sending a pleasant shiver down her neck. “None of them have a fraction of your grace, Emily.”

Emily looked up at him, a flush of rose rising to her cheeks. “I just want the kids to have a normal night, Damen.”

“They will,” he promised.

The queue for Santa moved quickly until Chloe and Oliver stood at the velvet rope.

The Santa Claus—a jolly, grandfatherly man with kind crinkles around his eyes—looked up from the velvet throne. When his eyes landed on Damen Valente standing ten feet away, Santa swallowed visibly, his professional smile freezing for a split second. Everyone in Chicago knew Damen’s face.

“Ho, ho, ho!” Santa managed, recovering his composure with a warm, booming chuckle. “Well, look at you two! Come on up, little ones! Don't be shy!”

Chloe didn’t need an invitation. She practically scrambled up the two carpeted steps, hitching her red velvet skirt, and plopped herself squarely onto Santa’s left knee. She looked down at Oliver, gesturing wildly.

“Oli! Sit here! It’s soft!”

Oliver hesitated. His dark eyes flickered nervously toward the surrounding crowd, who were openly watching the legendary, silent Valente heir. Oliver took half a step back, his knuckles whitening around Dasher.

Damen moved to step forward, ready to protect his son from the spotlight, but Emily gently laid a hand on Damen’s forearm.

“Trust him,” Emily whispered.

Damen paused, looking down into Emily’s trusting eyes, and held his ground.

Oliver looked at Chloe. The little girl reached out and squeezed his wrist, offering him that same bright, goofy smile that had broken through his darkness in the kitchen weeks ago.

Slowly, bravely, Oliver climbed the two steps. He didn't sit on Santa’s knee, but he stood right beside Chloe, resting his hand on the throne’s golden armrest.

The crowd fell into an expectant, suffocating silence. Even the string quartet in the corner seemed to soften their notes.

“Well, hello there, young lady!” Santa said, smiling warmly at Chloe. “And hello to you, young man. Have you two been good this year?”

“I have been very, very good!” Chloe announced into the microphone that Santa held near his beard, her squeaky toddler voice broadcasting clearly across the entire silent ballroom. “I ate all my broccoli! Even the trees!”

A collective ripple of soft, charmed laughter spread through the high-society crowd.

“That is very impressive!” Santa chuckled. “And what would you like for Christmas, little miss? A new doll? A tea set?”

Chloe shook her head emphatically, her blonde curls bouncing around her shoulders. She looked out across the crowd, scanning the room until her bright green eyes locked squarely onto the tall, imposing figure of Damen Valente standing in his immaculate black tuxedo.

Chloe lifted her small, chubby finger. She pointed directly at the most feared syndicate boss in the Midwest.

“Santa,” Chloe declared loudly, her voice ringing clear as a silver church bell through the ballroom. “I don't need any toys! I want *him* to be my Daddy!”

The entire ballroom froze.

A collective, audible gasp swept through two hundred socialites, judges, and council members. Champagne glasses paused halfway to lips. Society matrons looked like they were going to faint.

To point at Damen Valente—a ruthless titan of the criminal underworld—and demand him as a father was something no sane human would ever imagine.

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her face burned crimson with mortification. “Chloe—” she gasped, moving forward.

Damen froze.

The feared boss of Chicago stood entirely paralyzed. His breath locked in his chest. His razor-sharp mind, capable of outmaneuvering federal prosecutors and rival mobsters simultaneously, completely shut down. *I want him to be my Daddy.* The words echoed in his skull, shattering every defense, every cold calculation he had ever built.

Santa blinked, sweat beading on his forehead, looking between the tiny girl and the mafia kingpin with sheer, unadulterated panic. “Uh… well… ho, ho, ho… that’s… that is quite a big wish, little lady—”

Before Santa could finish, movement broke the frozen tableau.

Oliver stepped forward.

The seven-year-old boy, who had lived in total, impenetrable silence for four hundred days—the boy who had watched his mother die on a frozen road—let go of the golden throne.

He didn't run. He didn't panic.

Oliver walked down the two carpeted steps. He walked past the velvet ropes. He walked straight toward Damen Valente.

The entire room held its breath. Not a single person dared to cough.

Oliver stopped in front of his father. He looked up at the towering man who had spent thirteen months drowning in quiet despair.

Slowly, deliberately, Oliver extended his small right hand. His thin, warm fingers wrapped around Damen’s large, scarred index finger.

Oliver tilted his head up. His dark, intelligent eyes filled with tears, but his face was bright with an emotion Damen had thought was buried forever in a cold cemetery plot.

Oliver parted his lips.

A small, trembling, beautiful breath escaped his chest.

And then, in a voice as clear and pure as winter morning sunlight, Oliver spoke:

“Daddy.”

One word.

Just one word.

A sharp, violent crack of emotion tore through Damen Valente’s chest. The ruthless king of the north side fell to his knees on the marble floor of the Drake Hotel ballroom, entirely heedless of his expensive suit, entirely heedless of the two hundred elite onlookers staring in shock.

Damen pulled his son into his chest with a desperate, shuddering sob. He buried his face in Oliver’s neck, his broad shoulders shaking violently as he wept.

“Oliver…” Damen choked out, his voice broken and raw with thirteen months of unshed tears. “My boy. My sweet boy.”

Oliver wrapped both arms around his father’s neck, dropping Dasher to the floor for the first time in over a year. He buried his face in Damen’s tuxedo collar and whispered it again, louder this time, right into his father’s ear:

“Daddy. Don't cry. I’m here.”

Across the room, Tiny—standing at the back entrance in his full tactical gear—burst into noisy, uncontrollable tears, burying his massive face in a dinner napkin. Cosmo took off his glasses, wiping his eyes with trembling fingers, smiling from ear to ear.

Emily stood with both hands pressed over her mouth, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, her heart swelling with an emotion so vast, so profound, it terrified her.

From the throne, Chloe clapped her hands with sheer toddler triumph.

“See?” Chloe cheered loudly. “Santa did it! Santa brought the words back!”

Damen slowly lifted his head. His eyes were red, wet with tears, but his face held a look of profound, radiant peace that no one in Chicago had ever seen on him before.

Still holding Oliver tightly in his left arm, Damen reached out with his right hand.

He caught Emily’s trembling wrist, gently pulling her down to her knees beside them.

May you like

Before the entire shocked, weeping ballroom of Chicago’s highest society, Damen Valente wrapped his arm around Emily Parker, drawing her and their children into an embrace that sealed their fate forever.
