Chapter 5 - The Stolen Diamond

By five o'clock in the afternoon, the tension inside the Hargrove estate had reached a boiling point. Delivery trucks choked the driveway. Sound engineers calibrated the string quartet's microphones in the massive grand ballroom. In the professional kitchen, three guest chefs imported from New York were shouting in French over copper pots of simmered truffles and reductions.

Upstairs in the master suite, Vanessa Cole was preparing for war.

She sat before an antique triple-mirror vanity, watching Karin vacuum the heavy Persian rug near the wardrobe. Vanessa’s expression was murderous. Every attempt she had made to dismiss Karin over the past two weeks had been quietly blocked by Ruth, and now Julian was asking uncomfortable questions about the foundation’s offshore wire transfers.

Vanessa knew that once the wedding date was announced tonight, Julian’s board of directors would begin an independent audit before approving the merger of their assets. She needed Karin gone—discredited, arrested, and out of Julian's sight before the girl could show him whatever receipts she had been talking about.

"Karin," Vanessa called out casually, unclasping a heavy diamond tennis bracelet from her wrist. The stones glittered like ice under the recessed lighting. "Put this in the jewelry safe behind the portrait of Julian's grandfather. My wrist is swelling from all the stress."

Karin turned off the vacuum. She looked at the bracelet, then at Vanessa’s face in the mirror. A clinical instinct warned her immediately.

"Miss Cole, household protocol states that only Mrs. Callahan or Mr. Hargrove may access the master suite safe," Karin said smoothly. "I can fetch Ruth for you right now."

"I am the mistress of this house, and I am giving you a direct instruction!" Vanessa barked, slamming her lipstick down onto the marble vanity. "Are you refusing an order?"

"No, Miss Cole. I will place it on the nightstand beside the safe so Ruth can lock it away when she arrives."

Karin walked over, took the bracelet by its golden clasp without touching the stones, set it down deliberately on the mahogany nightstand in plain view of the open doorway, and walked out of the room.

Ten minutes later, the alarm was raised.

Karin was down in the basement staff quarters, changing into her formal black-and-white service uniform for the evening gala, when the heavy steel door flew open.

Vanessa marched in, flanked by two armed estate security guards and a visibly distressed Julian Hargrove.

"Where is it?!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a manicured finger directly at Karin’s face. "Where did you put it, you thieving bitch?!"

The entire staff locker room went dead silent. Ruth Callahan emerged from the laundry alcove, wiping her soapy hands on an apron, her face hardening instantly.

"What is the meaning of this racket?" Ruth demanded, placing herself squarely between Vanessa and Karin.

"This little thief stole my diamond bracelet!" Vanessa yelled, performing for Julian and the guards. Her eyes were wide with dramatic tears. "I asked her to put it in the safe, and when I went back into the room, it was gone! Fifty thousand dollars! A gift from Julian's mother!"

Julian stepped forward, looking deeply pained. "Vanessa, please, calm down. Let’s not make accusations until we look around properly."

"Look around?!" Vanessa turned to Julian, her voice cracking with theatrical outrage. "Julian, she was the only one in the suite! She knew what it was worth! Check her locker! Check her purse right now!"

The two security guards looked uncomfortably at Julian, awaiting his command. Julian looked at Karin.

Karin stood perfectly still beside her locker. She did not cry. She did not protest. Her breathing remained rhythmic and deep, her posture that of a commander surveying a familiar battlefield.

"Go ahead," Karin said quietly, her voice cutting through the hysteria like a clean scalpel. "Search it."

Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms in triumph. "Open it yourself. Before the police arrive to do it for you."

Karin turned the dial on her locker, pulled the latch, and swung the narrow metal door wide. Inside was nothing but her worn winter coat, a framed photograph of Amora on her seventh birthday, and an ordinary leather handbag.

"Search the bag!" Vanessa ordered the guard.

The security guard reached into the locker, unzipped Karin’s purse, and turned it upside down onto the bench. A wallet, a tube of chapstick, keys, a stethoscope wrapped carefully in a velvet pouch, and a notebook fell out.

No bracelet.

Vanessa’s smirk vanished, replaced by a twitch of shock. "Check her pockets! She has it on her person!"

"Miss Cole," Ruth Callahan’s voice boomed through the room with the force of an oncoming train. The older woman stepped forward, holding up a small velvet jewelry box. "Are you looking for this?"

Vanessa froze. Her skin turned an ash-gray color beneath her heavy foundation.

"I found this twenty minutes ago," Ruth said coldly, her eyes burning into Vanessa. "Dropped deep into the crevice of the sofa cushions in *your* private sitting room. Must have slipped off your wrist while you were having your afternoon cocktail. Before you start screaming accusations at a woman who works ten hours a day to feed her child, Miss Cole, perhaps you should check your own sloppy habits."

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the locker room.

Julian stared at the velvet box in Ruth’s hand, then turned his gaze to Vanessa. His expression was no longer exhausted or confused. It was chilled with profound disgust.

"Julian... darling... I must have forgotten..." Vanessa stammered, backing toward the door, clutching her throat. "I was so frantic with the preparations, I—"

"That’s enough, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice flat and terrifyingly quiet. "Get upstairs. The guests will be arriving in thirty minutes."

Vanessa looked around the room, seeing the open, silent contempt on the faces of every maid, butler, and cook. She turned on her heel and fled down the hallway, the sharp clatter of her designer heels echoing against the concrete.

Julian stood alone for a second. He looked at Karin, his hazel eyes clouded with shame. "Karin... I am deeply sorry."

"You don't have to apologize for other people's actions, Mr. Hargrove," Karin replied softly. "You only have to decide whether you want to keep paying for them."

Julian held her gaze for three long seconds, swallowed hard, and walked out without another word.

Ruth turned to Karin, letting out a long, ragged exhale. "How did you know she was going to plant it?"

May you like

Karin opened her locker, picked up Amora’s photo, and set it back on the shelf. "Because in the ER, whenever a drug seeker couldn't get what they wanted, they always tried to get the nurse fired for theft. The tactics never change, Ruth. Only the clothes."
