Chapter 5 - The Family Summit

Michael dropped his keys on the counter with a loud, metallic clatter. His face was flushed, his jaw tight.
"What the hell did you do?" he demanded, slamming his gym bag onto the floor. "My mother called me in hysterics ten minutes ago. She said a sheriff’s deputy showed up at her house and handed her a stack of court papers accusing her and Vanessa of fraud!"
I didn't look up from the tablet where I was reviewing my separate bank account transfers. "It’s not an accusation anymore. It’s a formal legal proceeding."
"Are you out of your mind?" Michael shouted, stepping closer to the island. "That’s my family! You dragged my mother and sister through the mud over a clerical error!"
"A clerical error?" I looked up, meeting his eyes with a cold steadiness that made him flinch. "Michael, three separate financial documents bear my forged signature. My credit rating is tied to debts I never agreed to. Your sister’s boutique is failing, your mother’s house is underwater, and they decided to use my identity as their personal safety net. And you're standing in our kitchen yelling at me?"
"They were in a tight spot!" Michael yelled, running a hand through his hair in frantic desperation. "Vanessa’s loan fell through last month, and Mom was facing a refinancing penalty. They just needed a temporary bridge until the commercial property sold. They didn't think you'd notice, or... or they thought you'd be willing to help if you knew how bad it was!"
"Without asking me? Without my consent? By forging my signature?" My voice cut through the kitchen like a razor. "That’s not asking for help, Michael. That’s a crime."
Before Michael could formulate another excuse, his cell phone rang furiously on the counter. The caller ID flashed GLORIA.
He stared at the screen, paralyzed, then looked at me. "Answer it," he whispered. "Tell them you'll drop the charges. We can handle this privately."
"I'm done handling things privately," I said. "Answer it on speaker, or get out of my house."
Michael hit speakerphone with a trembling thumb. Gloria’s hysterical voice filled the kitchen instantly.
"Michael! Did you talk to her? Tell me she called the lawyer back! They're threatening to freeze my accounts, and Vanessa is crying because her business license is under review! Tell your wife to stop this insanity right now!"
Michael looked at me pleadingly. I crossed my arms and stared at him.
"Mom," Michael said, his voice cracking under the pressure. "Sarah isn't dropping it. She... she has proof about the signatures."

A sharp intake of breath echoed from the speaker, followed by Vanessa’s shrill voice cutting in: "She’s bluffing! You let her ruin our lives over a stupid party? Over some chairs?!"
That was the exact moment Michael realized the full scope of what his family had done—and how little they cared about anyone but themselves.
