Chapter 6 - The Stolen Legacy

The ocean breeze seemed to stop entirely. The only sound was the distant cry of seagulls and the steady lick of Noah enjoying his ice cream.
I stared at Arthur, my heart pounding violently against my ribs. "Your sister? Evelyn was your sister?"
Arthur turned to me, his expression softening with immense warmth. "Evelyn Vance was my older sister, Laura. She was your grandmother. When our parents passed decades ago, Evelyn and I took very different paths in life. I went to New York and built an international maritime law and commercial development firm. Evelyn stayed here, living a quiet, modest life, loving her family."
He turned back to Robert and Patricia, whose faces had turned from pale to an absolute, terrified white.
"When Evelyn grew ill eight years ago," Arthur continued, his voice ringing out clearly enough for the photographer, the tourists, and the resort staff at the nearby pavilion to hear every single word, "she called me. She told me she was worried about her son Robert’s integrity. She worried that Patricia’s vanity and favoritism would poison the family."
"Arthur, please," Dad pleaded, sweating profusely under the midday sun. "This isn't the time or the place. We’re on a family vacation..."
"You forfeited the right to call this a family vacation the moment you told your six-year-old grandson to sleep in the back of an automobile!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking like a thunderclap across the dunes.
Several beachgoers stopped and turned to stare. Ashley took a step back, her mouth hanging open in shock.
"Let’s talk about Evelyn’s estate, Robert," Arthur said, taking a step closer. "Because as the senior executor of the Vance Family Trust, I kept copies of every single ledger, every single transfer, and every single condition my sister attached to her passing."
Patricia found her voice, though it sounded shrill and panicked. "Evelyn left that money to us! She gave us full discretion to manage it for the family!"
"Did she, Patricia?" Arthur smiled, a cold, predatory smile that belonged to a legendary courtroom attorney. "Is that what you told Laura when you refused to help her with Noah’s preschool? Is that what you told her when you showed up to a little boy’s fifth birthday with a dollar-store candy bar, claiming money was tight?"
"Arthur, stop," Dad whispered, looking around desperately.
"Evelyn left a liquid estate of seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars," Arthur announced clearly.
I gasped. My vision blurred. *Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars?*
"Three hundred thousand was designated directly into an irrevocable trust for Laura and any future children she might have," Arthur continued, his eyes locked onto Patricia’s trembling frame. "Another three hundred thousand went to Ashley. The remaining hundred and fifty thousand was left to Robert, under the strict legal condition that he oversee the fiduciary distribution according to Evelyn's exact instructions."
I turned to my mother, feeling a wave of nausea. "You told me Grandma only left twenty thousand dollars total, and that it all went toward her final medical debts."
"She lied to you, Laura," Arthur said simply. "Robert and Patricia fabricated an emergency debt settlement to siphon your three hundred thousand dollars out of the designated escrow account. And where did that money go, Robert?"
Arthur didn't wait for Dad to answer.
"It went toward paying off Ashley’s mortgage in Raleigh. It paid for Ashley’s luxury SUV. It paid for Ashley’s private country club membership. And it paid for this very penthouse suite at the Grand Pelican Crest, which—ironically enough—is built on land developed by Vance Maritime Holdings."
Ashley’s eyes went wide. She looked at her parents in genuine terror. "Mom? Is that true? You told me Grandma gave that money specifically to me because Greg’s business was struggling!"
"Be quiet, Ashley!" Patricia hissed, tears of humiliated rage spilling down her cheeks. "We did what we had to do to keep this family respectable! Laura was a single mother! She got pregnant by a man who abandoned her! Why should she get half of Evelyn’s hard-earned money to waste on an illegitimate life while you had a real family?!"
*Slap.*
The sound echoed sharply across the sand.
It wasn't Arthur who struck her. It was me.
My hand stung, but my heart had never felt clearer.
"Do not ever speak about my son like that again," I said, my voice vibrating with a power I didn't know I possessed. "Noah is ten times the human being you or anyone in this pathetic, superficial circle will ever be."
Patricia clutched her red cheek, gasping in utter disbelief. "You hit me! Robert, she assaulted me! Call the police!"
May you like
"Call them, Robert," Arthur said coldly, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. "Because while the police are on their way, I will gladly phone the State Attorney General’s Division of Financial Crimes and report the fraudulent misappropriation of trust funds, grand larceny, and fiduciary embezzlement committed by Robert Bennett."
