Chapter 5 - Behind the Glass Walls

"Down!"
Nathaniel didn't hesitate. He lunged across the space, sweeping Rose off the sofa and tackling her to the thick Persian rug just as the massive bay window exploded into thousands of razor-sharp shards.
A second gunshot roared through the room, the bullet thudding deeply into the mahogany bookshelf right where Nathaniel’s head had been a second earlier.
Rose choked back a scream as glass rained over them. Nathaniel covered her body completely with his own, his heavy frame shielding her from the flying debris. His arms locked around her shoulders, keeping her pressed flat against the floor.
"Stay down," he breathed against her ear, his voice calm despite the violent rush of adrenaline. "Don't move."
In the pitch black, the shrill wail of the estate’s secondary alarm system finally kicked in. Red emergency backup lights bathed the library in an eerie, bloody glow. Heavy tactical boots pounded down the hallway outside.
"Mr. Callaway!" a voice shouted. It was Briggs, the head of Nathaniel's private security team, kicking open the splintered library door with his weapon drawn. Two guards with assault rifles swept the perimeter. "We have multiple perimeter breaches on the northern lawn! The power grid was physically severed at the junction box!"
Nathaniel slowly rolled off Rose, helping her sit up against the base of the heavy desk. He checked her over quickly with his hands, his eyes dark with frantic concern. "Are you hit? Did any glass cut you?"
"I'm... I'm okay," Rose gasped, clutching her bruised ribs, her heart hammering against her chest like a trapped bird. "Nathaniel, your shoulder..."
She pointed with a trembling finger. The sleeve of Nathaniel's dress shirt was sliced open, blood staining the fine fabric from a jagged shard of flying glass.
"It's a scratch," Nathaniel dismissed it instantly, turning to Briggs. "Where is my mother?"
"Safe in the panic room on the third floor," Briggs reported. "The shooters were snipers positioned in the tree line. Once the exterior floodlights died, they took two shots and vanished into the woods. Our perimeter team is sweeping the grounds with thermal scopes now, but whoever did this knew the blind spots in our camera grid."
Nathaniel’s jaw clenched. "Only a handful of people have access to the security blueprints of this estate."
"Julian," Rose whispered before she could stop herself.
Nathaniel’s eyes snapped to hers. The suspicion had clearly crossed his mind, but hearing it out loud made the reality sickeningly real. Julian Vance had been the family attorney for six years. He handled the estate's security contracts, legal trusts, and corporate filings.
"Briggs," Nathaniel commanded, standing up and pulling Rose gently to her feet. "Get Eleanor and Rose into the central vault. Double the guard on the gate. If anyone approaches this property—including members of Callaway Global's board—shoot on sight."
"Understood, sir."
Thirty minutes later, the estate was locked down under military-grade protocol. The vault was a luxurious, reinforced subterranean bunker beneath the wine cellar, furnished with leather couches, a full kitchen, and independent communication arrays.
Eleanor was resting on a daybed, sipping chamomile tea while a private nurse checked her vitals. She looked fragile, but her eyes held a fierce, unyielding steel.
Rose sat at a marble island, a first-aid kit open in front of her. Nathaniel sat on a barstool beside her, his torn shirt discarded, revealing broad, muscled shoulders marked by bruises from the rooftop struggle.
"Hold still," Rose said softly, holding an antiseptic wipe.
Nathaniel didn't flinch as she cleaned the glass cut on his shoulder, his hazel eyes fixed intently on her face. "You're surprisingly calm for someone who just survived a sniper attack."
"When you grow up in my neighborhood, you learn that panicking doesn't stop the bullets," Rose replied, her focus entirely on carefully applying medical butterfly strips to close the wound. "It just makes your hands shake."
"You shouldn't have had to grow up like that," Nathaniel said quietly. His hand rose, his fingers lightly brushing a stray strand of dark hair away from her forehead. His touch was unexpectedly tender, sending a sharp shiver down Rose's spine that had nothing to do with fear.
Rose froze, her breath catching in her throat. Their faces were inches apart. She could see the golden flecks in his eyes, could smell the scent of cedar and rain on his skin.
"Nathaniel..." she whispered, unsure whether she was warning him or asking him to come closer.
"I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who smiled at me while calculating how much money they could steal from my pockets," Nathaniel said, his voice a low, gravelly confession. "Victoria wanted my name. Julian wants my company. My board wants my shares. But you... you tore your hands to the bone to save my mother, and you didn't even know who we were."
"I knew she was somebody's mother," Rose said simply. "That was enough."
A faint, bitter smile touched Nathaniel's lips. "To most people in my world, that means nothing."
Before Rose could reply, her mind suddenly sparked with a vivid memory from the rooftop. The trauma of the fall had clouded the details, but now, sitting in the quiet safety of the bunker, the pieces began falling into place with terrifying clarity.
Rose dropped the gauze. Her eyes widened.
"Nathaniel," she said urgently, grabbing his arm. "The catering service cart."
Nathaniel frowned. "What about it?"
"My agency uses an automated digital inventory scanner mounted on top of the mobile bar carts," Rose said, the words tumbling out in a rush. "It’s a high-definition 360-degree camera designed to track alcohol usage and prevent staff from stealing expensive bottles! It was parked right behind the floral arch—less than ten feet from where Victoria pushed your mother!"
Nathaniel went utterly still. "Does the scanner upload to the cloud?"
"No," Rose shook her head rapidly. "It stores everything locally on an encrypted solid-state drive inside the cart's base to prevent guests' private conversations from leaking online. The agency collects the drives at the end of every week."
Nathaniel sprang to his feet, the fatigue instantly vanishing from his frame. "The penthouse is currently sealed by the NYPD, but Arthur Sterling’s lawyers have filed an emergency petition to reclaim Victoria's personal belongings from the bridal suite tomorrow morning."
"If Arthur's team gets inside that penthouse before we do," Rose realized with mounting dread, "they'll bribe the cleanup crew or destroy the cart entirely."
Nathaniel reached for a clean black tactical jacket, his eyes burning with renewed purpose.

"Then we aren't waiting for tomorrow morning," Nathaniel said. "We're breaking into Callaway Tower tonight."
