Chapter 6 - Vanessa and Patricia’s Karma

The radiator in Room 114 of the Starlight Motel clanked and hissed, belching a dry, metallic heat that did nothing to warm Vanessa’s freezing feet.

Four hours had passed since Daniel had marched out the door.

Vanessa’s stomach roared with hunger. Her expensive silk pajamas were still stained with dried mud from the Oakridge driveway, and the battery on her iPhone was hovering at three percent.

“He should have been back by now,” Vanessa whined, tossing the cheap motel remote onto the dresser. The television only picked up two static-filled local channels and an endless loop of Spanish soap operas. “He was supposed to bring back my credit cards and money for food! I haven't eaten since yesterday morning!”

Patricia was sitting up against the stained headboard, looking like a ghost. Without her daily blowouts, her high-end skin serums, and her diamond earrings, she looked every bit her seventy-one years. Her hair was a frizzy, silver mess, and her face was lined with deep, permanent creases of bitterness.

“Daniel will fix it,” Patricia muttered, though her voice lacked conviction. “Danny has always taken care of us. He is a genius. A master of finance. Arthur Sterling needs him. That little mouse Emma couldn't possibly outsmart my son.”

*Buzz. Buzz.*

Vanessa’s phone gave a faint vibration before the screen flickered weakly.

An incoming email notification appeared. The sender was **Talent Management Global**, the boutique influencer agency that had signed Vanessa three months ago after she falsely claimed her family owned a hedge fund.

With shaking fingers, Vanessa tapped the notification.

*“Dear Vanessa Cole,*

*Due to egregious violations of our agency’s standard morality clause—specifically regarding the viral video you produced and published depicting the physical and psychological abuse of a minor child with a disability—your representation agreement is hereby terminated immediately.*

*Furthermore, our legal department has received formal notice from the law offices of Vance, Sterling & Croft. A civil defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress lawsuit has been filed against you in State Court, seeking statutory damages in the amount of $2,500,000.*

*All pending brand sponsorships with GlowSkin, FitLife, and LuxeWear have been revoked. Any outstanding payments have been frozen pending the outcome of the litigation.*

*Do not contact our office again.”*

Vanessa shrieked, dropping her phone onto the threadbare carpet.

“No! No, no, no!” she screamed, pulling at her bleached blonde hair. “They can’t do that! I had a five-thousand-dollar contract coming this Friday! My followers love me!”

“What is it? What happened?!” Patricia demanded, trying to scramble out of the bed.

Before Vanessa could answer, the door to the motel room didn't just knock—it shuddered under the impact of a heavy battering ram.

*BAM! BAM! BAM!*

“Police Department! Open the door!”

Patricia screamed. Vanessa scrambled backward into the bathroom, trying to hide behind the mildewed shower curtain.

The cheap hollow-core door gave way on the second kick, splintering around the latch.

Two uniformed officers and a female detective in plainclothes stepped into the room, their badges gleaming on their belts.

“Patricia Cole?” the detective asked, scanning the room until her eyes landed on the trembling old woman clutching the headboard.

“W-what do you want?!” Patricia stammered, pulling the thin polyester sheet up to her chin. “I am an elderly woman! You have no right to break in here!”

“Mrs. Cole, I am Detective Miller with the Financial Crimes Division,” the detective said, pulling a folded warrant from her jacket. “We have an active arrest warrant for you issued by the State Attorney General’s office.”

“Arrest warrant?! For what?!”

“For grand larceny, criminal conspiracy, and receiving stolen property,” Detective Miller stated plainly. “Over the past twenty-four months, you accepted over eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars in direct wire transfers from bank accounts embezzled by your son, Daniel Cole. Furthermore, you forged signatures on three real estate lease agreements in Florida using corporate credit lines belonging to Vanguard Global.”

“That was Daniel’s money!” Patricia yelled, kicking her legs like a petulant toddler. “He gave it to me! A mother has a right to gifts from her son!”

“It wasn't his money, ma’am. It was stolen corporate capital belonging to Emma Thorne.”

The name hit Patricia like a bucket of ice water.

“Emma…” Patricia whispered, her voice cracking. “That little… that ungrateful little bitch…”

“I’d advise you to keep your mouth shut, Mrs. Cole,” Detective Miller replied coldly. “Get out of the bed and put your hands behind your back.”

“No! I won’t!” Patricia screamed, flailing her arms wildly. “I have a medical condition! I need my cardiologist! You can’t touch me!”

The two uniformed officers stepped forward efficiently. They pinned Patricia’s arms, pulled her from the mattress, and secured her wrists in steel cuffs behind her back.

As they dragged her toward the door, Patricia caught sight of Vanessa peeking out from the bathroom.

“Vanessa! Help me! Call the lawyers! Call the club!” Patricia howled.

Detective Miller turned toward the bathroom door. “Vanessa Cole?”

Vanessa froze, trembling violently. “I didn't do anything! I’m just an influencer! I didn't know about Daniel’s bank accounts!”

“You’re not under arrest. Yet,” Detective Miller said, handing her a thick manila envelope. “Consider yourself formally served with the civil summons from the Thorne Estate. You have twenty-one days to file a response, or a default judgment of two point five million dollars will be entered against you. And by the way—the management of this motel has been notified that your brother’s credit card bounced. You have thirty minutes to vacate this room before you’re charged with criminal trespass.”

Detective Miller turned and walked out, following the officers who were hauling a kicking, screaming Patricia down the motel balcony.

Vanessa was left standing alone in the center of the filthy room.

The silence was suffocating.

She picked up her phone from the floor.

The screen flickered one last time before dying completely: a notification from Instagram informing her that her account—her entire identity, her only source of validation—had been permanently banned for community guidelines violations regarding child harassment.

Vanessa sank down onto the stained carpet, burying her face in her dirty hands, weeping as the cold wind whistled through the broken motel door.
