Chapter 8 - Whispering Shadows

Two years after the trial, a strange package arrived at the foundation office in Manhattan.

It was an unlabelled wooden box bound in tarnished brass, delivered via a private courier service from a probate law firm in London. Attached to the top was a letter addressed personally to Captain Mauricio DeLuca (Ret.).

Jessica set the box on my desk, her eyes wary. "Our security team scanned it. No explosives, no chemical residues. Just old paper and leather."

I unlocked the brass latch and opened the lid. Inside lay a leather-bound journal with faded gold lettering on the spine: Julian Vance — Personal Engineering Notes, 2018–2022.

Beside the journal was an official letter from a private safety-deposit vault in Zurich, Switzerland.

Dear Mr. DeLuca,

Per the automated probate instructions left by the late Julian Vance in the event of his untimely death, this vault compartment was held under a five-year release moratorium. As of October 14, 2026, the secondary custody criteria have been met.

I pulled out a silver USB drive resting at the bottom of the velvet box.

I plugged the drive into my laptop. A single video file appeared on the screen, dated four days before Julian and Clara’s fatal accident in 2022.

I clicked play.

Julian Vance’s face filled the screen. He looked tired, sitting in his dimly lit home study in Scranton, dark circles under his eyes, but his voice was as warm and familiar as the days we spent together in college.

"Mauricio," Julian began, leaning toward the camera. "If you are watching this video, it means Clara and I are gone, and our secondary safety protocol has been activated."

My breath hitched in my throat. I leaned closer to the monitor.

"I am recording this because over the past three months, I have uncovered something disturbing about Vance Global Logistics. When my father passed away, he left controlling equity in trust for Renata. But six weeks ago, your father, Arthur DeLuca, approached me with a proposal to merge our logistics contracts with DeLuca Holdings."

Julian took a deep breath on the recording, his face hardening.

"I refused. I noticed discrepancies in Arthur’s offshore accounting. When I threatened to initiate an independent audit, Carmen DeLuca called my wife. She didn't offer money, Mauricio. She threatened Renata. She told Clara that small families who don't cooperate have a habit of suffering unexpected accidents."

I gripped the edge of my desk so hard my knuckles turned white.

"Clara and I have secured our original trust documents in a private vault in London," Julian continued. "We signed a updated codicil naming you as Renata’s sole legal guardian and trustee, completely bypassing the DeLuca estate. Mauricio... if anything happens to us, please protect my little girl. Don't let them turn her into what they are. Teach her to be kind. Teach her to be brave."

The video screen faded to black.

I sat in the quiet office for a long time, the hum of the city traffic outside sounding far away.

Julian had known. He had known the danger he was in, and even in his final days, his only thought had been securing a shield for his daughter—a shield he had entrusted to me.

"Mauricio?" Jessica asked softly from the doorway.

I looked up from the screen, wiping a single stray tear from my cheek.

May you like

"He chose me, Jess," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "He knew what his daughter was worth long before anyone tried to put a price tag on her."

"And you proved him right," Jessica replied gently. "Every single day."
