Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Spring bloomed fully over the city a month later.

The evening sky was a pale velvet purple, illuminated by the warm lights of the borough. The city was quiet, settled into a deep, unshakable peace.

I sat on the wide stone patio behind my estate in New Jersey, looking out over the rolling green hills. A warm fire crackled in the stone pit in front of me, casting long, dancing shadows across the lawn.

Beside my chair lay two dogs.

Bruno sat on his soft velvet rug, resting his heavy, silver-muzzled head on his front paws. He was old, tired, but his eyes were filled with a calm, serene satisfaction. He had lived a long, violent life, but his final years had been defined by purpose, justice, and love.

Shadow lay right beside him, his massive black head resting over Bruno's back, a young guardian keeping his master warm in the cool evening air.

Tony walked out onto the patio, carrying two glasses of scotch. He handed one to me and sat down in the wooden armchair across the fire.

"Everything is quiet in the city, Boss," Tony said, taking a sip. "The docks are clear, the neighborhood is safe, and Mateo called today. He's opening a second dining room in the back of the restaurant. He wants to name it The Guardian's Rest."

I smiled faintly, swirling the amber liquid in my glass. "That's a good name."

"It really is," Tony murmured, looking down at the two dogs by the fire. "Who would have thought a dog at a funeral home would change everything?"

"Dogs don't see titles, Tony," I said, leaning back in my chair. "They don't care about money, territory, or power. They see what's inside a man's heart. Marco thought he could hide behind twelve years of service, but Bruno smelled the blood on his hands the second he walked into that room."

Bruno lifted his head slightly at the sound of his name. He let out a long, quiet huff, his dark eyes looking up into mine with complete, absolute devotion.

I reached down and stroked his soft, graying ears.

"You saved us all, old boy," I whispered.

A gentle breeze blew through the trees surrounding the estate, rustling the green leaves, carrying the fresh scent of blooming flowers and rich earth.

Shadow lifted his head, his sharp ears pricking forward, scanning the dark treeline beyond the lawn. He didn't growl. He didn't bristle. He was simply watching, vigilant, ready to protect the home that had been built on truth.

Bruno closed his eyes, leaning his heavy head back onto his paws, resting peacefully beside the fire.

The war was over. The debt was paid. The line between right and wrong had been drawn in stone, guarded by a bond that neither violence, nor greed, nor time itself could ever break.

I sat in the quiet night, holding my glass, watching the firelight dance across the faces of my guardians—a man and his dogs, unbroken, unbothered, and finally at peace.
