Chapter 7 - The Trap in the Penthouse

By 3:00 AM, the storm outside had worsened, turning into a torrential gale that rattled the heavy reinforced glass of the penthouse windows.

Inside the apartment, the three girls were still asleep. I had moved Piper into the guest bed beside Chloe and Maya. The three sisters were intertwined beneath the down comforter, their breathing synchronized, their faces relaxed in the first peaceful rest they had known in years.

I stood by the doorway, watching them. The resemblance was so uncanny it bordered on miraculous. How had I lived five years believing two of them were ashes in an urn? The guilt gnawed at my stomach like acid, but I forced it down. Guilt was useless. Survival and vengeance were all that mattered tonight.

My phone vibrated. It was Marcus Reed.

"Nathaniel," Reed's voice cut through the line, sharp and wired with adrenaline. "I reviewed the ledger and the audio file. We verified the encryption signatures. The medical ledger matches an offshore account in the Cayman Islands that the Department of Justice has been tracking for eighteen months under Operation Cradle. Sterling’s name is all over it."

"Can you arrest them?" I demanded.

"It's not that simple," Reed replied grimly. "Sterling is a sitting U.S. Senator with diplomatic immunity protections and high-level assets in the state police. If we move on him with just a five-year-old audio recording and a leaked ledger, his legal team will tie it up in federal court for a decade, and Vance will conveniently commit suicide before he ever takes the stand. We need them caught red-handed. We need them attempting to recover the children."

"They already tried to run us off the road tonight," I snarled.

"And they will try again," Reed said. "Our wiretaps just intercepted an encrypted communication between Victor Kozlov and Senator Sterling's personal aide. They know the girls are inside the Brooks Grand Hotel. They think you don't know who they are yet. They believe you just think they're two homeless runaways you picked up out of charity."

A dark, dangerous idea began to form in my mind.

"What are they planning?" I asked.

"Child Protective Services," Reed answered. "In two hours, at 6:00 AM, two corrupt state social workers accompanied by plainclothes state troopers will arrive at your lobby with an emergency custody warrant. They will claim the girls were reported missing from a state foster facility in Bucks County. They will use the law to legally take Maya and Chloe out of your hands. Once those girls get into their van, they will disappear forever. And you won't be able to stop them without getting shot or arrested for assaulting federal officers."

My grip on the phone tightened until the glass groaned.

"They think they're going to walk into my hotel and take my daughters again?"

"Not if we turn their own play against them," Reed said coldly. "I have two federal judges signing emergency warrants right now. A tactical unit from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team is staging at the Navy Yard. We let them serve the warrant. We let Vance and Sterling’s fixers commit to the grab. But we control the room."

"No," I countered immediately. "I am not using my daughters as bait."

"We won't have to," Reed said. "We swap the girls out. My team will extract Chloe, Maya, and Piper through the subterranean utility tunnels beneath your hotel right now. They’ll be on a secure transport to a military base in Maryland within twenty minutes. You stay in the penthouse with our federal agents disguised as your personal staff."

I turned my head, looking back at the bed.

Chloe had stirred in her sleep, reaching out her small hand blindly until her fingers found Piper’s hair. Piper nestled closer, wrapping her arm around her sister's shoulders.

Five years ago, I had failed to protect Caroline. I had let them take my family because I was blind, trusting, and weak.

"Get your team here, Marcus," I whispered. "Get my girls out. And leave Kenneth Vance to me."
