Chapter 10 - Building a Future

Later that evening, as the crowd thinned out and the acoustic band transitioned into soft background melodies, Leah and I stepped outside onto the newly poured concrete patio.

The autumn air was crisp and cool, carrying the faint, earthy scent of falling leaves and woodsmoke from the outdoor fire pit. The stars overhead were bright and sharp against the vast Ohio sky.

Leah leaned against my shoulder, her arms wrapped around my waist as we looked out over the sprawling lawn where strings of fairy lights twinkled in the canopy of ancient oak trees.

“You know,” Leah murmured quietly against my chest, “if someone had told you two years ago, standing in this exact spot while cake was smeared across your cousin’s dress, that you’d end up owning the rebrand of this place... would you have believed them?”

I smiled, wrapping my arms around her and resting my chin on top of her head. “Not a chance. I would have told them they were crazy.”

“Look how far you’ve come, Ed,” she said, looking up at me with so much pride in her eyes that it took my breath away. “You didn't just clear your name. You built an entire life out of the rubble.”

“I didn't do it alone,” I said softly, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “I had the best partner in the world standing right beside me when everyone else looked away.”

She smiled, her lips pressing against mine in a sweet, lingering kiss that tasted of cider and autumn chill.

My phone buzzed in my jacket pocket—a quiet, single vibration. I pulled it out, expecting a work email or a notification from the marketing dashboard. Instead, it was a text from Mom.

*“Just finished setting up the living room in the new apartment. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, and I made myself a cup of tea. Thinking of you. Love you, Eddie.”*

I stared at the screen for a moment, a deep, abiding warmth spreading through my chest. I typed back: *“Love you too, Mom. Enjoy the quiet.”*

May you like

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, wrapped my arm tightly around Leah, and looked out across the twinkling lights of the renovated barn. The past was behind us—fully reconciled, fully resolved, and safely laid to rest. Our future was wide open, bright, and built on a foundation that nothing could ever shake.
