Chapter 5 - THE BANK HEIST ATTEMPT

The kitchen grew so quiet I could hear the hum of the refrigerator.

"My savings?" I repeated, my voice dropping an octave. "Ryan tried to access my personal bank account?"

"He has your social security number from old tax forms when Mom used to file our returns together, and he guessed your mother’s maiden name for the security questions," Sarah explained rapidly, her eyes wide. "He thought he could transfer five thousand dollars from your payroll account to cover a luxury nanny agency. He tried to do it yesterday afternoon."

I grabbed my phone off the counter. My hands were shaking, but this time it wasn't fear—it was pure, unadulterated fury.

I opened my banking app.

Warning: Multiple incorrect password attempts detected on your primary savings account.

Account temporarily locked for security verification.

I stared at the red warning banner flashing across my screen. Ryan hadn't just expected me to give him my time; he had actively attempted to commit financial theft to fund his Caribbean vacation.

"He actually tried to rob me," I whispered.

"Clara, what are you going to do?" Sarah asked, looking genuinely alarmed. "He's your brother. If you report this to the bank or the police..."

"If I report this to the police, it's a federal felony," I interrupted, my voice ice-cold. "Identity theft, wire fraud, and unauthorized access to financial institutions. Ryan crossed a line that can't be uncrossed."

Before Sarah could answer, my phone buzzed in my hand.

Even though I had blocked Ryan, numbers from our hometown area code could still leave voicemails through network routing. A new voicemail notification popped up.

I hit speakerphone.

Ryan’s voice blared through the kitchen, breathless, panicked, and furious.

"Clara! You little psychopath! Why is your bank account locked?! Do you have any idea what kind of emergency we are in right now?! Brooke is screaming, our flight leaves at six a.m. tomorrow, and we need that money to pay the emergency nanny service we finally found! Unfreeze the account right now, or I swear to God I am driving over to your apartment and calling the police for elder abuse regarding Mom's health!"

The voicemail cut off with a click.

Sarah stared at my phone in absolute horror. "Elder abuse? Are you kidding me? Aunt Martha is sitting downstairs eating shortbread cookies right now!"

"He's desperate," I said quietly. "His whole house of cards is collapsing, and he thinks he can bully his way out of it."

I stood up, walked over to my desk, and grabbed my jacket.

"Sarah, thank you for telling me this. You are a lifesaver," I said, slipping my arms into the sleeves.

"Where are you going?" she asked, standing up in alarm. "Clara, don't go over there! It's a war zone!"

"I'm not going to my parents' house," I said, grabbing my car keys. "I'm going to the police station."
