Chapter 4 - The Blind Husband

I held Emily against my chest for a long moment, my pulse pounding in my ears. The terror my daughter had carried in silence made my stomach churn with pure nausea.

How had I been so blind?

My mother had moved into our guest suite six months ago after selling her home in Florida, claiming her arthritis had become too severe for her to live alone. I had thought having her close would be a blessing. I had believed she would help Hannah with Emily while I spent weeks on the road managing construction projects.

Whenever Hannah seemed quiet or exhausted during my weekend visits, Margaret had always whispered comforting explanations in my ear: *Hannah is just having one of her spells, dear. You work so hard; don't burden yourself. I’ll make sure she rests.*

And like a fool, I had believed her. I had trusted my mother over the woman I swore to protect.

"Hannah," I said, keeping my voice as steady as I could. "I need you to take Emily into our bedroom upstairs. Lock the door from the inside and wait for me."

"Nathan, what are you going to do?" Hannah asked, panic flaring in her eyes. "She’ll lie to you. She always twists everything. She’ll make you think it was all my fault."

"Not this time," I promised, pressing a firm kiss to her forehead. "Take Emily upstairs. Let me handle this."

Hannah hesitated, then gathered Emily into her arms and hurried up the staircase. The sound of the master bedroom door clicking shut echoed down the hallway.

I turned toward the ground-floor guest room.

My heart hammered against my ribs, driven by a mixture of boiling fury and cold dread. What kind of mother had I harbored in my home? What had Emily meant by "papers with Mommy’s picture" and "bottles with skull stickers"?

I walked down the hallway. The door to Margaret’s suite was closed. Through the wood, I could hear the muffled sound of her voice. She was on the phone.

I pressed my ear against the panel, listening.

"...no, Richard, he came home twenty-four hours early," Margaret was saying, her tone sharp and urgent. "He caused a massive scene in front of the church auxiliary. Threw everyone out. We need to expedite the filing tomorrow morning."

A brief pause.

"Because if he talks to her long enough, she’ll convince him she’s fine!" Margaret snapped into the receiver. "The paperwork is already signed by the state evaluator I hired. The judge just needs the emergency signature. Once Hannah is remanded for a seventy-two-hour psychiatric hold, Nathan will have no choice but to let me take permanent custody of Emily. Just have the courier ready."

I stood in the dim hallway, the air completely frozen in my lungs.

My mother wasn't just emotionally abusing Hannah.
