Chapter 13 - The High School Perimeter

By nine thirty in the morning, Briarfield High School looked like a military staging ground.
Six armored FBI tactical response vehicles blocked the main entrance on Elm Street. Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear had established a five-hundred-yard perimeter around the campus, pushing back the growing swarm of news vans, stunned parents, and terrified school board members.
The shelter-in-place order had been superseded by an executive federal warrant.
I sat in the command trailer parked on the football field, a warm jacket draped over my shoulders, watching the surveillance monitors. Willa was resting safely in an FBI transport vehicle behind us, guarded by two armed agents and Leo, who refused to leave her side.
Special Agent Miller stood beside me, studying the structural blueprints Silas had drawn.
"Kessler isn't in his main office," Miller said, pointing at the thermal imaging feed from the drone circling overhead. "Our forward teams breached the administrative suite ten minutes ago. It was cleared out. The safe was empty. He took the hard drives from the server room."
"He didn't run into town," I said, pointing at the blueprint’s lower level. "Look at the subterranean service line. The new athletic complex has an underground utility tunnel connecting the stadium basement to the old municipal storm drainage network. Silas marked it during the initial excavation."
"Why would he go down there?" Miller asked.
"Because that’s where the evidence is buried," I answered. "Thirty thousand drums of toxic solvent are sealed directly beneath the home bleachers. If the state environmental teams drill through that concrete pad, Kessler faces twenty consecutive life sentences for federal racketeering and environmental terrorism. He’s down there trying to destroy the foundation."
Suddenly, the radio on Miller’s vest crackled with high-priority static.
*"Command, this is Team Three at the stadium tunnel entrance! We have an armed suspect inside the boiler nexus! He has a hostage!"*
Miller grabbed the microphone. "Identify the hostage, Team Three!"
*"It’s Beckett Kessler! The son! The principal has locked them both inside the chemical valve room! He’s threatening to detonate the main propane distribution manifold!"*
My stomach dropped.
Kessler was completely unhinged. Cornered by federal agents and stripped of his power, he was prepared to blow up the entire stadium—and take his own son with him.
"I’m going down there," I said, rising to my feet.
"Mrs. Bellamy, absolutely not," Miller objected, grabbing my arm. "This is an active hostage situation. We have tactical negotiators on site."
"Your negotiators don't know the tunnel layout," I snapped, pulling away with fierce authority. "Silas designed those valve bypasses. If Kessler touches the high-pressure propane relief line, your negotiators won't have time to say hello before this entire field becomes a crater. I know the override switches. And Kessler knows me."
Miller stared at me for three seconds, weighing the cold determination in my eyes against the ticking clock on his monitors.

"Give her a tactical vest and a comm unit," Miller barked to his deputy. "Team Three, hold your fire! We have an asset going in!"
