Chapter 9 - The Castle Crumbles

“A civil ceremony?” Arthur Davis stammered, looking frantically between Hector and Elena. “Hector... is this true? Julian was married?”

Hector looked like a cornered animal. Sweat was beading across his forehead, dripping down into his starched white collar. “She’s lying! Julian would never marry a common gutter girl without family consent! There is no record! There is no registry!”

“The marriage license was registered in Windham County, Vermont, under Julian’s legal middle name,” Gabriel Vance countered smoothly, sliding a certified, gold-embossed document across the glass table directly into Arthur Davis’s trembling hands. “It was sealed pursuant to Julian’s specific instructions to protect his wife from the targeted harassment of Carmen DeLuca. We unsealed it at dawn.”

Gabriel pulled out a second set of documents.

“Furthermore, this is the court-ordered neonatal genetic profile conducted last week by the federal crime lab. Renata DeLuca is the biological daughter of Julian DeLuca and Elena Martinez. Under Article IV of the DeLuca Corporate Charter—drafted by your own father fifty years ago, Hector—the surviving spouse and lineal heir of the founding lineage hold absolute, non-dilutable power of attorney over all board resolutions.”

The room erupted into chaos.

Board members began frantically whispering, checking their phones, and pushing their chairs away from Hector and Carmen as if they carried an infectious plague.

“You stole my baby,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet hiss that cut through the panic. She stared directly at Carmen. “You had your doctors drug me. You put a death certificate in my hands and told me my daughter was cold in the ground. You locked me in a padded room for five years, praying I would kill myself so your secret would die with me.”

Carmen pressed her back against the wall, her designer facade completely shattered. “I... I did what was necessary for this family! You were going to ruin everything Julian had! You were nothing!”

“You are the only thing that ruined this family, Mother,” I said, my voice heavy with absolute finality.

I looked at the FBI agents standing by the door.

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. The sharp, mechanical *clack* of the metal ratchets echoed through the silent boardroom like a gunshot.

“Hector DeLuca, Carmen DeLuca,” Miller announced, his voice carrying the full weight of the federal justice system. “You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, kidnapping, grand larceny, and the falsification of official records. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

“Wait! No!” Paola screamed, stepping back toward the emergency exit. “I didn't know about the baby! I swear to God, I didn't know about Whispering Pines! Hector just gave me checks! I didn't know where the money came from!”

“Save it for the grand jury, Paola,” I told her coldly. “Because the forensic audit shows your signature on three different shell-company transfer slips that funded Whispering Pines’ monthly hush money. You are going down with them.”

Paola’s knees gave out. She collapsed into an executive chair, burying her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.

Agent Miller grabbed Hector by the arm, spinning him around and forcing his hands behind his back. The proud, arrogant patriarch of the DeLuca dynasty was cuffed like a common street criminal in front of the very board members he had ruled over for three decades.

Hector glared at me, his face purple with humiliation and venom. “You ungrateful bastard! I gave you life! I built this empire for you! You are destroying your own blood!”

“You aren't my blood, Hector,” I replied, staring through him. “Blood protects its young. Blood loves unconditionally. You were just an abusive landlord who demanded rent on my soul. Get him out of my sight.”

Carmen began shrieking, flailing her arms as the second agent secured her wrists. “Mauricio! Don't do this! You can't let them take me! Think of what society will say! Think of the papers!”

“I will make sure the papers get every single detail, Mother,” I said quietly. “I will make sure the whole world knows you forced my brother’s orphan to wash dishes on Christmas morning while you embezzled her inheritance.”

As the agents led my screaming parents out of the boardroom in chains, the remaining directors sat in stunned, terrified silence.

Arthur Davis cleared his throat, his hands trembling as he straightened his tie. “Mauricio... Elena... on behalf of the board, we are utterly horrified. We had no knowledge of these grotesque crimes. If we had known—”

“You knew Hector was bleeding the accounts for two years, Arthur,” I interrupted, stepping to the head of the table and resting my hands on the leather chair Hector had occupied for forty years. “You just looked the other way because the dividends kept clearing your offshore accounts.”

Arthur swallowed hard, sinking into his chair.

I looked at Elena. She looked back at me, a calm, serene strength radiating from her eyes. She gave me a firm nod.

“As the court-recognized co-guardians of Renata Julian DeLuca, who holds fifty-one percent of the combined voting equity of DeLuca Global Logistics,” I announced to the room, “we are declaring this board dissolved effective immediately. All assets are frozen pending a full Department of Justice audit. Pack your desks. Security will escort you from the building within the hour.”

Without waiting for their protests, Elena and I turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the ruins of the DeLuca dynasty behind us forever.
