Chapter 18 - The Family Summons

While my professional life was soaring to unprecedented heights, my personal life was experiencing a seismic, earth-shattering tremor.

By late afternoon, I was driving back up toward the Cascade Mountains, the windows of my truck rolled down just an inch to let in the cool, crisp mountain air. My phone buzzed gently on the dashboard. It was a text message from my father.

*“They’re at the cabin, son. Your mother, Marcus, and Chloe. They drove up from Tacoma. They’re sitting on the front porch waiting for you. Don't let them drag you back down into the mud.”*

I gripped the steering wheel a little tighter, feeling a strange mixture of calm and finality wash over me. For years, the mere thought of facing my family’s collective wrath would have sent my heart rate through the roof. Now, I felt nothing. No guilt. No anxiety. Just the quiet, immovable strength of a man who finally knew his own worth.

When I turned my truck onto the gravel driveway of the cabin, I saw them.

My mother was sitting on the wooden porch swing, looking older, smaller, and infinitely more bitter than she had a week ago. Marcus was pacing back and forth in front of the steps, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his designer jeans, while Chloe stood nearby, holding a crumpled tissue and glaring daggers at the front door.

I killed the engine, climbed out of the truck, and closed the door with a solid, resonant *thud*.

The sound made all three of them snap their heads toward me simultaneously.

"Well, look who finally decided to show up!" Marcus barked, marching aggressively toward me across the gravel. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done, Jake?! My car is repossessed! Chloe’s facing eviction! Mom has been crying for forty-eight hours straight because her credit cards are maxed out and you cut off the family account!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I just stood by the driver’s side door, looking at my brother as if he were a stranger shouting in a foreign language.

"You finished, Marcus?" I asked quietly.

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his face turning a dark, furious shade of crimson. "What did you say?"

"I asked if you were finished," I repeated, my voice steady and completely devoid of emotion. "Because if you're done yelling, you can get back in your car and drive back to Tacoma. You don't live here. You aren't invited here. And you certainly don't own me anymore."

My mother stood up from the porch swing, her face twisted in an expression of profound, toxic betrayal. "Is that really how you talk to your own flesh and blood, Jacob? After everything we sacrificed for you? After all the years we raised you?"

May you like

"You didn't raise me, Mom," I said, looking her directly in the eye for the first time in my life. "You used me. There is a massive, life-altering difference. And that ledger is officially closed."
