Chapter 19 - The Silent Phone

That night, after the guests had driven home and the dishes were washed and put away, I sat on the wrap-around porch in a wooden rocking chair.
The forest was completely quiet. A light frost was beginning to form on the grass, glittering like diamonds under the full moon.
I pulled my phone from my pocket.
There were zero missed calls.
No frantic voicemails from Dale. No manipulative texts from Carol. No toxic threats from Grant.
The silence was not empty; it was complete. It was the absolute, unshakeable peace of a debt that had been settled to the very last cent.
My phone chimed softly once.
It was an automated notification from the county probate registry:
*CASE CLOSED: ESTATE OF VIVIEN HOLSTEAD. FINAL ACCOUNTING APPROVED. ALL TRUST CONDITIONS SATISFIED.*

I smiled. I tapped the screen off, slipped the phone back into my pocket, and closed my eyes, listening to the wind whisper through the tall pines of the land that had finally come home.
