Chapter 7 - A NEW HORIZON

The morning sun was warm as I sat on the porch of our new home—a charming three-bedroom house near a top-rated elementary school, purchased cleanly with my own savings and the fully recovered funds managed by Marcus’s firm.

Caleb ran across the green lawn, his laughter ringing out clear and bright. He was thriving. His heart was strong, his cheeks were rosy, and he was getting ready to start the second grade in the fall. In his hands, he held his favorite plush triceratops, tossing it up into the air and catching it with a triumphant grin.

Uncle Marcus walked up the porch steps carrying a tray of lemonade.

"How's the young man doing?" Marcus asked, sitting down in the rocking chair beside me.

"He's unstoppable," I smiled, watching Caleb chase a butterfly near the garden fence. "The doctor gave him a clean bill of health at his one-year checkup yesterday."

"And how are you doing, Elena?"

I looked out over the yard, feeling the cool summer breeze brush against my face. For four years, I had lived in constant fear of disappointing people who never truly cared for me. I had allowed guilt to dictate my choices, confusing sacrifice with love.

Now, my mind was quiet. My life was my own. My son was safe, happy, and healthy, surrounded by people who loved him for who he was, not for what he could provide for them.

"I'm completely at peace, Marcus," I said, taking a sip of the cold lemonade. "For the first time in my life."

Caleb ran up the porch steps, panting happily, and sat down on the bench beside me, resting his head against my arm.

"Look, Mommy," he said, holding up a small, smooth stone he had found near the garden. "It's shaped like a heart."

I took the stone, holding it in my palm, and pulled him close into a warm hug.

"It sure is, sweetie," I whispered, kissing the top of his head. "It sure is."
