Chapter 5 - The Awakening in Nashville

The morning sun cast a bright, blinding glare across the hardwood floors of our Nashville master bedroom.
Daniel groaned, rolling over and reaching across the mattress. His hand hit empty space. Frowning, he blinked his eyes open, rubbing his temples as a dull hangover throbbed behind his forehead.
"Claire?" he muttered, his voice thick with sleep.
There was no answer. The house was dead silent—too silent. Usually, he could hear Cooper running around the hallway or the smell of coffee drifting up from the kitchen.
Yawning, Daniel kicked off the sheets, threw on a silk bathrobe, and walked out into the hallway. The guest room doors were open, beds unmade, and his wife's side of the closet was completely emptied out. Every single hanger was bare.
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through his veins.
"Claire!" he shouted, walking down the stairs. "Where are you playing games?"
The kitchen was spotless. No coffee brewing, no breakfast cooking. On the center kitchen island sat a single white envelope with his name written in neat, precise handwriting.
Daniel snatched the envelope up, his hands trembling slightly as he tore it open.
Inside was a single printed document: a formal notice of asset freeze, bank account suspension, and an emergency injunction filed by *Bradford Industries Legal Counsel*. Below it was a preliminary indictment notice for identity theft, document forgery, and wire fraud.
"No..." Daniel whispered, his face turning ashen. "No, this is a joke. This isn't real."
He frantically pulled his phone out of his bathrobe pocket and dialed his bank.
The automated system answered immediately: *"We're sorry, but all accounts associated with this social security number and corporate entity have been temporarily suspended due to a security hold and ongoing federal fraud investigation."*
"Suspended?! Are you insane? This is Daniel Mercer, Premier Motors—"
*Click.* The line went dead.
Panicked, Daniel dialed Jessica's number. It rang once... twice... three times. Then went straight to voicemail.
He dialed again. Straight to voicemail.
Outside in the driveway, the sound of heavy engine brakes echoed. Before Daniel could rush to the front window, loud knocks pounded on the front door.
He pulled the door open, expecting local police. Instead, two men in sharp gray suits stood on the porch, holding heavy leather briefcases. Behind them sat two large flatbed tow trucks, already backing into the driveway.
"Daniel Mercer?" the lead man asked, flashing a federal investigator badge.
"Yes? What is this about?" Daniel stammered, his knees shaking.
"We are executing a court-ordered asset seizure and restraining order on behalf of Bradford Industries and affiliated plaintiffs," the investigator said coldly, stepping past him into the foyer. "Surrender your corporate keys, company vehicle access cards, and personal electronics immediately. Any resistance will result in immediate arrest."
Daniel stood frozen in the doorway as the movers marched past him into his garage, walking straight toward his brand-new luxury sports car—the very car he had bought with the forged loan.
As the tow truck winch whined to life, lifting his prized possession off the pavement, Daniel finally realized the catastrophic mistake he had made.

He hadn't married a penniless nobody.
He had just declared war on an empire.
