Chapter 18 - The Counter-Strike

The silence in the cavernous transit terminal stretched like a taut wire, ready to snap under the immense pressure. Marcus stood before me with an air of absolute certainty, treating my life and future as a mere chess piece in his family's elaborate damage-control strategy. He believed he had me completely cornered—that my instinct for self-preservation would override my morals, forcing me to sign away my integrity just to keep my freedom.
He didn't know me at all. Working under Eleanor for years hadn't just taught me how to process corporate paperwork; it had taught me how to read people, spot inconsistencies, and, most importantly, anticipate the trap before the door slammed shut.
I looked down at the manila folder in Marcus’s hands, then slowly raised my gaze to meet his cold, calculating eyes. A slow, deliberate smile crept onto my face.
Marcus frowned, his confident facade flickering for a fraction of a second. "What’s so funny? You think this is a bluff?"
"No, Marcus, I don't think it's a bluff," I said calmly, slipping my right hand into the deep pocket of my jacket. My fingers brushed against the small, cold casing of my digital voice recorder—which had been streaming audio directly to a secure, encrypted cloud server monitored by federal investigator Miller since the moment I stepped through the front doors of the terminal. "I just think you made a fundamental tactical error."
Marcus’s expression hardened instantly. He motioned sharply to the two heavy-set men flanking him. "Grab him. Take the phone."
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," a sharp, commanding voice rang out from the cavernous entrance behind them.
The heavy glass doors flew open, flooding the dim terminal with bright afternoon light. A dozen federal agents, led by Special Agent Miller himself, poured into the lobby, their windbreakers clearly marked with bold, yellow lettering. Their service weapons were drawn and pointed with absolute precision.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" Miller's voice echoed off the concrete walls with terrifying authority.
Marcus froze, his face draining of all color in an instant. The two men in overcoats immediately raised their hands, their tough-guy demeanor evaporating as they realized they were completely outgunned and outmaneuvered.
Marcus spun around, staring at Miller with wild panic in his eyes. "This is an illegal entrapment! We were having a private conversation!"
May you like
"A private conversation involving extortion, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice," Miller replied smoothly as he walked forward, snapping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto Marcus’s wrists with practiced efficiency. He turned his gaze toward me, offering a brief, approving nod. "Nice work, Arthur. The transmission came through loud and clear. Julian Vance’s offshore accounts were already flagged last night; your cooperation today just secured the final piece of the RICO indictment against the entire inner circle."
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for a decade. The suffocating weight on my chest vanished entirely. Eleanor’s empire wasn't just crumbling—it was being systematically dismantled from the top down, leaving no loose ends behind.
