Chapter 4 - The In-Law Intervention

The sound of the tow truck disappearing down the quiet, affluent street of Paradise Valley hung in the air like a death knell. Trent stood frozen on the front porch, the morning desert breeze catching the hem of his designer shirt. Brooke pushed past him, her face flushed with anger and disbelief.
“What do you mean we’re being evicted?” Brooke shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a manicured finger at the process server. “We live here! Trent owns this house! He told me so!”
“Mr. Lawson owns nothing,” the process server replied with clinical detachment. “Every asset associated with this address, including the furnishings inside, is under corporate receivership. You have two hours to remove your personal belongings. After that, the locks will be changed.”
With that, the two men turned on their heels, walking back down the stone steps toward their idling sedan.
Brooke spun around, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at Trent. “You lied to me! You said you were a wealthy tech executive, you said this house was yours, and you said we were set for life! I gave up my career, I'm carrying your child, and now we're getting kicked out onto the street?”
“Brooke, wait, let me explain—” Trent stammered, holding his hands up defensively. “Harper is just playing games! She's having a psychotic break because she can't handle losing me. I'll call my parents. They'll help us sort this out.”
Desperate, Trent pulled out his phone and dialed his mother, Gloria. It rang three times before an eager, high-pitched voice answered on the other end.
“Trent, darling!” Gloria chirped without missing a beat. “Did you make the bank transfer for this month yet? Walt needs his prescription refilled, and I saw a wonderful patio set online that Brooke is going to love for the back garden—”
“Mom, stop!” Trent yelled, interrupting her mid-sentence, his voice cracking with panic. “Forget the patio set! Everything is falling apart!”
Silence descended on the line for a second before Gloria asked, her tone shifting to one of sharp suspicion, “What do you mean, falling apart? Did Harper refuse to sign the transfer?”
“Harper locked us out of the accounts! The cards are frozen, the police—well, private investigators—just towed the Mercedes, and they’re evicting us from the house right now!” Trent ranted, pacing frantically across the marble foyer. “You and Dad need to wire us some money from your savings! Use the account I set up for you in Sun City!”
A sharp, incredulous laugh crackled through the speaker. “Use *our* savings? Trent Lawson, have you lost your absolute mind? You told us that woman was a billionaire tech mogul who would take care of us for the rest of our lives! We don't have savings; we live on a fixed pension!”
“But... but the house in Sun City—” Trent stammered, his brain struggling to process the betrayal coming from his own flesh and blood. “You bought it with the money I sent you from Harper's company!”
“And we put it in *our* name, you idiot!” Gloria snapped, dropping all pretense of maternal sweetness. “If you let a smart, wealthy woman slip through your fingers because you couldn't keep your hands off a twenty-four-year-old airhead, that is your own fault! Don't you dare come crying to your father and me for help. We have our own lifestyle to maintain!”

The dial tone buzzed harshly in Trent’s ear. He lowered the phone slowly, his face completely drained of color.
Brooke was standing right beside him, her arms crossed tightly over her pregnant belly, staring at him with pure venom. “Your parents don't even have money? You lied to them too?”
“Brooke, please—” Trent choked out, taking a step toward her.

“Don't touch me,” she spat, turning away and heading back up the stairs to pack her bags. “We are done. I'm calling my brother to come pick me up. Have fun sleeping on a park bench, loser.”
Trent stood alone in the grand foyer of the mansion he had so arrogantly claimed just twenty-four hours earlier. The walls seemed to close in around him, whispering the harsh reality of his own unmatched stupidity.
