Chapter 17 - Welcome to the World, Leo

At 4:18 AM on Sunday, November 22, the sharp, lusty cry of a newborn baby filled the operating room.
"He's here, Mara!" Elise wept, kissing my temple. "He's here! He's screaming his little lungs out!"
Dr. Chen smiled over the surgical curtain, holding up a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in a warm blanket. "Five pounds, eight ounces. Healthy, strong, and breathing entirely on his own. Meet your son, Mara."
They laid him against my bare chest.
The moment his warm, fragile skin touched mine, the universe seemed to stop spinning. The pain, the betrayal, the courtrooms, the jail cells—everything dissolved into nothingness.
He had a thick mop of dark hair and tiny, perfect fingers that immediately curled around my pinky finger.
"Leo," I whispered, tears of pure, overwhelming love streaming down my cheeks into my hair. "Your name is Leo. Because you are our little lion."
By noon that day, my recovery room was transformed into a garden.
Fiona had sent two dozen white lilies and a basket of fresh, warm brioche for the nurses. Mark Higgins arrived with a giant stuffed bear that was twice the size of the baby.
And then the door flew open, and June and Owen came rushing in, guided by Mrs. Gable.
"Quietly, sweethearts," Elise whispered with a smile. "Mommy is resting."
June tiptoed to the edge of the bed, her eyes wide as she looked at the tiny bundle sleeping in the clear plastic bassinet beside me.
"Is that him?" June whispered in awe. "Is that Leo?"
"Come here, Captain," I smiled, reaching out to pull her onto the edge of the mattress. Owen scrambled up beside her, staring with wide, curious eyes.
June reached out a single, careful finger and touched Leo's tiny cheek. Leo let out a soft sigh, stretching his miniature legs under the swaddle.
"He looks like an angel," June murmured, her voice filled with fierce, protective devotion. "Mommy, I'm going to teach him how to draw sailboats. And I'm going to make sure nobody ever throws his things away."
My heart swelled until I thought it might burst.
I wrapped my arms around June and Owen, resting my chin against June's dark hair as Leo slept peacefully beside us.
We were broken no longer. We were whole. We were sovereign.
May you like
We were a family.
