Chapter 4 - The Viral Fallout

While Matthew and Diane were discovering the harsh reality of frozen assets, the internet was having a field day with their humiliation.
By noon, the video of Diane slapping me had transcended local Raleigh news and blown up across national TikTok and Twitter channels, racking up over two million views under hashtags like #BirthdayBridezilla, #ToxicMotherInLaw, and #DespicableGroom.
Tessa and I sat in a quiet corner booth of an artisanal coffee shop downtown, watching the view counters spin upward in real-time. Anonymous internet sleuths had already identified Diane’s address, her social club memberships, and her past civic committee involvements. Commenters were merciless.
*“Look at the way the husband grabs her wrist like a caveman!”* one viral TikTok video analysis declared, zooming in on Matthew’s aggressive grip. *“That’s not just a bad family dynamic; that’s textbook enabler abuse.”*
"They're tearing her apart," Tessa whispered, scrolling through the comment section on a local community page where neighbors were sharing stories of Diane's past arrogance. "Someone posted about the time she screamed at a teenager working the register at the country club. People are organizing a peaceful protest outside her house this Saturday."
My phone rang again. This time, it wasn't Matthew. It was an unknown number with a local area code.
I answered cautiously. "Hello?"
"Is this Olivia Reeves?" A crisp, authoritative male voice came through the speaker. "My name is Arthur Vance. I'm the executive director of Safe Haven Family Alliance—the organization that recently terminated Matthew Reeves."
My posture stiffened instantly. "Yes, Mr. Vance. I'm Olivia."
"Mrs. Reeves, I want to apologize for calling you directly, but given the severity of the public fallout and internal developments regarding your husband, I felt it necessary to speak with you off the record," Vance said, his voice measured and professional. "When we reviewed the footage yesterday, our primary concern was public relations and institutional integrity. But this morning, our internal audit team received anonymous tips—and subsequent banking flags—suggesting that Matthew’s financial misconduct extended far beyond personal drama."
I held my breath. "What kind of misconduct?"
"Misuse of community outreach funds," Vance said grimly. "We discovered that over the past year, Matthew authorized three separate micro-grants totaling fifteen thousand dollars intended for vulnerable families, but the destination accounts trace back to an LLC registered under Diane Reeves's name."
My eyes widened. Matthew hadn't just stolen our savings; he had been embezzling from his own nonprofit to fund his mother's lifestyle.
"Mr. Vance," I said carefully, "if you send me an official subpoena or request for financial analysis, I can help you trace every single fraudulent transaction. In fact, I have already documented parallel unauthorized transfers from our personal accounts."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of rustling paper. When Vance spoke again, his tone had shifted from cautious inquiry to absolute resolve. "Mrs. Reeves... it sounds like your husband and his mother have been running quite an operation. Can you meet me at my office in an hour? I think we have mutual interests to discuss."
