Chapter 19 - The Reckoning

I walked slowly down the stone pathway and stopped three feet from the gate.

“Why are you here, Grant?” I asked softly.

Grant looked up, tears streaming freely down his gaunt cheeks, snot running from his nose. There was no arrogance left in him. No condescension. No suburban vanity.

“I don't have anywhere else to go, Mom,” he choked out. “The firm fired me. The state bar suspended my license. Paige filed for divorce and took everything that was left. I’m living in a studio apartment above a laundromat, working night shifts stocking shelves at a warehouse.”

I listened in silence, feeling neither triumph nor malice. Only the quiet, heavy sorrow of a mother witnessing the inevitable harvest of her son’s foolishness.

“I didn't come to ask for money,” Grant whispered, looking down at his calloused, dirty hands. “I swear to God on Dad’s grave, Mom, I don't want a single penny. Martin Vance made it clear what Dad wrote in the trust. I know I’m disinherited. I know I deserve it.”

“Then why are you here?”

Grant looked into my eyes, his gaze pleading. “Because every single night when I close my eyes, I see that turkey platter hitting your chest. I see the gravy on your shirt. I hear the horrible, disgusting things I said to you in the house where you loved me and raised me. It makes me sick to my stomach. I can’t live with myself, Mom. I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry.”

He pressed his forehead against the wooden pickets of the fence, sobbing uncontrollably.

I stood there for a long time, watching him.

Part of me—the wounded woman who had spent five years grieving in silence—wanted to turn around, walk back inside, and lock the door.

But the mother in me looked at this shattered man and remembered the little boy who used to scrape his knees on the sidewalk and run to me for a bandage.

I reached out, unlatched the garden gate, and pushed it open.

“Get up off the gravel, Grant,” I said quietly. “Come inside and wash your hands. I’ll make tea.”
