Chapter 15 - The Federal Warrant

At 8:00 AM on Monday morning, Attorney Marcus Vance—flanked by Adam and me—walked through the security checkpoints of the James E. Prendergast Federal Courthouse in Capital City.

Marcus Vance was no longer the cautious, hesitant attorney who had warned us about the Sterling empire. Once he inspected the blue folder—the original footprints, the altered transfer logs, and the financial records linking Sterling to Vance’s overseas accounts—his legal instincts had ignited with predatory fury.

At 9:30 AM, in the private chambers of Federal District Judge Evelyn Clarke, Marcus presented the emergency petition.

Judge Clarke, a severe woman in her sixties with a reputation for mercilessly prosecuting white-collar corruption, reviewed the documents with growing outrage. Beside the hospital logs lay the certified report from Apex Forensic Genetics, which had arrived in Marcus’s secure portal three hours ahead of schedule:

*Probability of Maternal Relationship between Rachel Morgan and Subject Maya Sterling: 99.98%.*

Judge Clarke closed the file, took off her reading glasses, and looked at Adam and me.

"Mr. and Mrs. Morgan," she said, her voice resonant with absolute authority. "In thirty-two years on the bench, I have never seen an abuse of power more grotesque than this."

She pulled a heavy black fountain pen from her desk stand and signed three separate warrants with sharp, deliberate strokes.

"Warrant for the arrest of Victor Sterling for federal kidnapping, conspiracy, and wire fraud," she announced. "Warrant for the search and seizure of Highland Manor. And an emergency protective custody order for the minor child, June Morgan, legally known as Maya Sterling."

She handed the signed documents to the Chief Deputy US Marshal standing by the door.

"Marshal Campbell," Judge Clarke ordered. "Execute these warrants immediately. Coordinate with the State Police tactical unit. And ensure that child is retrieved without harm."

"Yes, Your Honor," Campbell replied, turning on his heel.

"Can we come?" I pleaded, taking a step forward. "Please, Marshal. She doesn't know who she is. If she sees tactical gear and guns, she will be terrified!"

Marshal Campbell hesitated, looking at Judge Clarke.

The judge nodded slowly. "You may ride in the secondary command vehicle, Mrs. Morgan. But you remain behind the perimeter until the estate is secured. Understood?"

"Understood," I whispered, clutching Adam’s hand.
