Chapter 6 - The Runway Collection

The next three weeks passed in a blur of hyper-focused energy.
Our living room became a buzzing hub of high-fashion production. Amy worked tirelessly, turning her creative vision into physical reality. I watched in awe as she constructed five distinct runway looks, each one telling a clear story of transformation.
Look One was a dramatic structural trench coat, crafted from upcycled men's wool trousers and lined with vibrant floral silk.
Look Two was a sharp, modern skirt-suit made entirely from repurposed denim jackets, featuring intricate hand-distressed detailing and geometric metallic brass hardware.
Look Three was a flowing evening cape fashioned from vintage curtains, paired with a sleek black jumpsuit created from recycled athletic wear.
Look Four was a breathtaking utility vest and pleated trousers set—the very outfit that had originally caught Evelyn Vance’s eye at the country club.
And then came Look Five—the showstopper.
Amy took the sky-blue knit sweater I had saved up to buy her for Christmas, unraveled sections of the sleeve seams, and expertly woven the sky-blue yarn together with strips of recycled silver metallic thread and reclaimed white lace. She paired it with a dramatic, floor-length ballgown skirt made entirely from the discarded fabric scraps of every single project she had completed over the past two months. It was a masterpiece of zero-waste luxury design.
As the date of the show approached, tension within the family reached a boiling point.
My sister Vanessa, realizing that Evelyn Vance and Cleveland's high-society elite were going to be in attendance, desperately tried to pivot her narrative. She began posting on social media about how "proud" she was of her niece, even taking credit online for "donating the original materials that launched Amy's passion."
I saw the posts, but I said nothing. I didn't need to fight Vanessa on social media; the runway would speak for itself.
On the afternoon of the showcase, the Grand Ballroom of the Downtown Plaza Hotel was packed to capacity. Bright stage lights illuminated a long, glossy black runway. Camera flashes flickered continuously as fashion reporters, regional buyers, society figures, and local media filled the surrounding seating tiers.
Backstage was chaotic and thrilling. Models were getting their hair and makeup done, dressers were hanging garments, and organizers were rushing around with clipboards.
Amy, at just ten years old, was the youngest designer in the venue. Yet, as she checked the seams on her models' garments, she carried herself with unbelievable calm and professional focus.
"Nervous, sweetie?" I asked, kneeling beside her to straighten her collar.
Amy smiled, shaking her head. "Not anymore, Mom. At Grandma's house on Christmas, I felt small. But when I'm backstage here... I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."
I kissed her forehead, fighting back tears of pride. "Go show them what real luxury looks like."
Ten minutes before the lights dimmed, I walked out to take my seat in the front row.
Sitting just three seats down from me were my mother Eleanor, my father Richard, and Vanessa. Vanessa was wearing an expensive designer dress, trying hard to look relaxed, but her eyes nervously scanned the prominent media figures sitting around us. Eleanor looked visibly uncomfortable, clutching her designer handbag tightly in her lap.
When my parents saw me sit down, my father cleared his throat. "Clara... we brought a bouquet of flowers for Amy for after the show."
I offered a polite, distant smile. "That’s nice, Dad. Make sure you watch closely. You might recognize some of the fabrics."
Before my father could respond, the ballroom lights dimmed to pitch black. A heavy, rhythmic bassline echoed through the sound system, and a single spotlight illuminated the head of the glossy black runway.
The announcer's voice boomed over the speakers:
