Chapter 8 - Celeste’s Desperate Pivot

By Friday morning, Celeste had realized that the legal walls were closing in, so she did what modern narcissists always do when cornered by the truth: she took the fight to the internet.
I was nursing Leo on the living room sofa when my phone pinged with an alert from an old high school friend.
*Mara... have you seen Facebook? Celeste is posting insane things about you.*
I opened the app with a heavy sigh.
Celeste had posted a lengthy, melodrama-drenched diatribe on her public profile, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph of an empty crib draped with a pink baby blanket.
*“My heart is completely shattered,”* the post began, already garnering over four hundred reactions and dozens of shares. *“After years of agonizing infertility, heartbreak, and private medical procedures, my family suffered an unspeakable betrayal. My younger sister, who became pregnant unexpectedly and expressed repeated desires to surrender her child due to military obligations, has suddenly reneged on our family agreement.
She took tens of thousands of dollars from our family funds under false pretenses, and now, fueled by postpartum paranoia, has weaponized the military police to separate an aunt from the baby she was promised to protect. Please pray for my family during this dark time of spiritual warfare. Justice will prevail.”*
The comments below it were a cesspool of manufactured outrage:
*“How could a sister be so cruel?”*
*“Military or not, she sounds completely unfit!”*
*“Call child services immediately, Celeste! We are praying for you!”*
I felt a brief surge of hot anger, but it was quickly swallowed by cold calculation. Celeste had just committed another catastrophic strategic error.
I immediately forwarded the post to Marcus.
His call came within three minutes. "Did you see it?" he asked, sounding remarkably cheerful.
"I saw it," I said grimly. "She's publicly accusing me of taking money from them and abandoning my child."
"Mara, she just handed us the holy grail of defamation per se," Marcus laughed. "Under state law, falsely accusing someone of a crime of moral turpitude or professional unfitness in writing carries automatic punitive damages. Furthermore, by publicly referencing the fraudulent adoption agreement, she waived any expectation of privacy regarding the underlying civil court proceedings."
"What does that mean for us?"
"It means I don't have to wait for the civil trial to drop the hammer," Marcus said. "Sarah Lin just finished compiling the certified bank tracing documents, complete with the receipts for the Mercedes and the Cabo vacation. Are you ready to let the world see the real Celeste Ward?"
"Do it," I said without hesitation. "Post the receipts."
Ten minutes later, Marcus filed an emergency motion for a public Gag Order and an Amended Complaint for Defamation, attaching sixty-eight pages of unsealed financial records as exhibits.
Under local court rules, newly filed civil exhibits involving public figures or active controversies immediately become public record. Marcus emailed the entire packet to the investigative desk of the county’s largest newspaper, along with a polite note pointing out that Mrs. Ward’s public claims directly contradicted sworn financial records currently under review by the District Attorney’s Economic Crimes Division.
By noon, the tide on social media didn't just turn—it became a tsunami.
A prominent local news blogger picked up the court filing and posted the headline:
**SUBURBAN SOCIALITE ACCUSED OF $42K FAKE IVF SCAM TO STEAL MILITARY SISTER'S NEWBORN.**
The blogger posted the side-by-side screenshots: Celeste’s tearful plea about an "empty crib" next to the verified bank ledger showing an $11,200 payment to Precision Auto Group for her luxury SUV.
The comments on Celeste’s original post transformed instantly:
*“Wait... you spent her military pay on a Mercedes?”*
*“The fertility clinic doesn't even exist?!”*
*“You tried to steal her baby three days after a C-section? You belong in prison!”*
By 1:00 PM, Celeste had deleted her entire Facebook profile. But the internet never forgets. The screenshots had already been shared thousands of times across military family forums, local community groups, and parent associations.
