Chapter 4 - The 9:00 PM Call

Anna’s cottage smelled of lavender floor polish and the bitter scent of cold rain leaking through the window frames. It was small—a modest living room with a worn floral sofa, a tiny kitchen nook, and a hallway leading to a single bedroom where Sophie should have been sleeping.

Instead, the cottage was dark, save for the digital green glow of the microwave clock in the kitchen.

8:58 PM.

I sat in the armchair opposite the kitchen counter, my silhouette completely masked by the deep shadows of the room. Leo stood flat against the wall beside the front door, an unsuppressed tactical shotgun held across his chest. Outside in the freezing drizzle, two men waited in the rhododendron bushes, covering the perimeter.

On the laminate counter sat Anna’s cheap, prepaid flip phone.

Beside the phone was an audio recording device connected via a wiretap tap-line, monitored by Leo’s senior technician who was parked in a plain van two miles down the road.

8:59 PM.

The silence in the cottage was suffocating. Every ticking second echoed like a falling shell casing. I looked at the small dining table where Sophie had left a half-colored drawing of a swallow flying over a red house. Beneath the drawing, she had written in wobbly crayon: *FOR MR. DANTE.*

A child had lived with terror for months, listening to her mother sob into a pillow, while fifty yards away, I sat in luxury drinking forty-year-old scotch.

The phone vibrated violently against the formica counter.

*BZZZ. BZZZ.*

The screen lit up with a string of blocked digits.

I stood up slowly, the leather of my gloves creaking slightly. I walked to the counter, pulled the antenna out with my teeth, and flipped the phone open.

I pressed the speaker button and set the phone flat on the counter.

I didn't say a word.

A harsh, mechanical rasp came through the tinny speaker—a software voice-distorter mimicking the cadence of a throat-cancer patient.

*"You’re late picking up, Anna."*

The voice echoed faintly in the room. Leo shifted his weight, his eyes narrowing as he listened to the rhythm of the caller's breathing between words.

*"I hope you have the five thousand. If you don't have the cash tonight, you’re going to wrap your little girl in a blanket and leave her on the back steps of the service alley. She’ll pay off the interest in six months. Do you hear me?"*

I leaned down until my lips were two inches from the microphone.

"She hears you," I said softly.

A sudden, sharp intake of breath hissed through the receiver. The line went completely dead for four long seconds.

*"Who is this?"* the distorted voice demanded, the mechanical tone cracking slightly around the edges.

"This is Dante Moretti," I answered, my tone as quiet and steady as a heartbeat. "And you have made an irrecoverable error."

*"Moretti—"*

"You sat at my table," I continued, cutting through his rising panic. "You drank my wine. You took the money I earned and you hid your filth behind the tears of an innocent woman and her six-year-old child."

A metallic clatter sounded in the background of the call—a distinct sound, like a heavy set of brass keys hitting a glass coffee table.

*"You think you can protect her, Dante?"* the voice snarled, dropping the mechanical modulator slightly as his rage took over, the underlying Brooklyn accent bleeding through the digital disguise. *"You don't even know what's happening under your own roof! Your brother was weak, and you’re blind!"*

"I know Mateo Reyes didn't drown," I said coldly. "And I know where the thirty crates of diamonds went twelve years ago. I’m holding the ledger, Marco."

A dead, horrified silence descended upon the line.

No words followed. Just the sound of a phone being snapped shut and the sharp click of a disconnected line.

Leo cursed under his breath. "Jesus, Dante... it was him. It really was Marco."

"He was calling from inside the estate," I said, pointing toward the window. "The key sound. He dropped his desk keys on the glass table in the carriage house."

I turned to Leo, my eyes locked on his.

"Lock down every gate. Cut the external power to the secondary garages. I want him alive, Leo. But if he raises a weapon, leave him where he falls."
