Chapter 16 - The Siege of the Vault

Julian Sterling didn't look panicked; he looked like a man who had won a game of chess ten moves before his opponent even realized they were playing. He casually pulled a sleek silver smartphone from his pocket, tapping the screen once.
"You’re trespassing on federal jurisdiction, Mr. Miller, and Mrs. Hayes," Julian said, his voice dripping with condescension. "The documents in that cabinet belong to the federal receivership. Taking them constitutes industrial espionage and destruction of state property. Federal marshals are twenty minutes away."
"There are no federal marshals, Julian," Greg said, stepping forward to place himself between the lawyer and me, his broad shoulders blocking their view of the open filing cabinet. "You’re representing a private corporation owned by Cheryl, acting under forged jurisdictional claims. The moment those ledgers hit the District Attorney’s desk, you’re both facing twenty years for wire fraud and extortion."
Cheryl let out a sharp, brittle laugh that echoed off the damp concrete walls. "Who do you think the District Attorney answers to, Greg? You think a small-town prosecutor is going to touch a multi-million-dollar estate backed by Sterling & Vance? You’re out of your depth."
"Maybe local prosecutors won't," a calm, clear voice echoed from the top of the vertical shaft.
We all whipped our heads upward.
Standing at the rim of the ladder, holding a professional-grade audio recorder with a glowing red LED light, was Madison. Her navy apron was stained with fresh paint, her hair pulled back in a messy bun, but her eyes were fierce, steady, and blazing with absolute clarity.
"Madison!" I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat. "What are you doing down here? Get back up to the house!"
"I heard the generator start from my studio, Mom," Madison said, her voice ringing down the concrete shaft like a bell. "So I plugged my art-studio intercom into the old house wiring. I’ve been recording every word since Julian started talking about forged documents."
Julian’s composed veneer finally cracked. A flicker of panic crossed his sharp features as he looked up at the young girl. "Little girl, put that down—"
"It’s already being streamed to my cloud drive, Mr. Sterling," Madison interrupted coolly, holding up her phone. "And I just hit 'Send' to my uncle’s attorney in New York, as well as the FBI field office in the city. The file name is *Cheryl and Julian’s Extortion Masterclass.mp3*. It should be downloading onto their servers right about... now."
Cheryl let out a strangled cry, lunging toward the ladder as if she could climb up and physically snatch the phone from her granddaughter’s hands. "You ungrateful, spoiled little brat—!"
Greg moved like lightning. He grabbed Cheryl by the arm, spinning her around and pinning her gently but firmly against the concrete wall, blocking her path to the ladder. "It’s over, Cheryl. The game is played."

Julian Sterling spun on his heel, diving toward the secondary escape tunnel behind the filing cabinets, desperate to reach his car before the authorities arrived.
