Chapter 10 - The Phantom Lineage

The phone dropped from Carter’s fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Outside, the wind howled through the snow-laden branches of the oak tree, rattling the windowpanes like a hand trying to force its way in from the cold.

"Missing?" I whispered, looking at the glowing screen of the phone lying on the floor. "How could it be missing? Marcus Vance is in a maximum-security holding cell!"

David Sterling’s voice echoed thinly from the speaker. "Marcus is in custody, yes. But the FBI believes he sold his access codes to a third party before his capture. We're looking at a black-market broker, Carter. Someone who buys and sells compromised fertility assets to private offshore clinics."

Carter stood up slowly. He looked down at his trembling hands, the hands of an architect, an honest man who had spent his entire life building things with integrity and care.

"There's another child out there," Carter whispered, the words sounding like they were being torn from his chest. "Or the potential for one. My flesh and blood, frozen in a tank, being passed around like contraband."

I stood up and walked to him, wrapping my arms tightly around his waist, burying my face in his chest. I could feel the violent, chaotic beating of his heart.

For months, I had been the one fighting the phantom of motherhood—the accusation that Ellie wasn't mine, the fear of having my daughter ripped from my arms. But now, the nightmare had inverted itself. Carter was being confronted with the horrifying reality that a piece of his biological legacy had been weaponized, commodified, and set loose in the dark underbelly of a corrupted medical syndicate.

"David," Carter said, his voice regaining a cold, dangerous clarity as he picked up the phone. "Who bought it?"

"The FBI is interrogating Marcus Vance right now," Sterling replied. "The US Attorney offered to take the death penalty off the table regarding a related interstate homicide charge if Marcus cooperates fully. We should have a name by morning."

"I don't just want a name," Carter said, his teeth bared in an expression of raw, protective fury. "I want that canister found. I want it secured under federal seal. If someone tries to use my DNA to bring a child into this world under fraudulent circumstances, I will tear this country apart brick by brick to find them."

"We will find it, Carter," Sterling assured him. "The federal authorities have jurisdiction now. Every port, every private clinic, and every cryogenic transport service on the Eastern Seaboard is on high alert. Try to get some sleep. I will call you the second the interrogation concludes."

The line went dead.

Carter set the phone on the mantelpiece and turned to face the fire. The flames cast long, dancing shadows across his features, highlighting the hard lines of exhaustion and fury carved into his face.

"I thought it was over," he said quietly. "I thought when they locked Vanessa up, we had finally won."

"It *is* over with Vanessa," I said, reaching up to cup his face in both of my hands, forcing him to look at me. "Vanessa is locked in a padded room where she can never touch us again. This isn't Vanessa, Carter. This is the rot left behind by the men who enabled her. And we are going to see it destroyed. Together."

He closed his eyes, resting his forehead against mine. "How do you do it, Layla? How do you stay so strong?"

"Because of her," I whispered, glancing toward the ceiling where our daughter slept. "Because when you love someone the way we love Ellie, you don't get the luxury of falling apart. We fight for our family, Carter. Whatever form that fight takes."

At four in the morning, the phone rang again.

It wasn't David Sterling. It was Detective Miller.

"Carter," Miller’s voice sounded rough, gravelly from a night of chain-smoking and high-stakes interrogation. "Marcus Vance broke. He gave up the buyer."

Carter gripped the phone. "Who is it, Miller?"

"It wasn't an offshore clinic," Miller said, and the tone of his voice made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. "It was an individual. A private buyer who wired two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Marcus’s offshore account in the Caymans twelve hours before the raid."

"Give me the name," Carter demanded.

"The money came from a shell corporation registered in Delaware," Miller said. "But the beneficial owner of that corporation was unmasked ten minutes ago by federal forensic accountants."

Miller paused, taking a ragged breath.

"It's Arthur Monroe, Carter. Vanessa’s father."
