Chapter 13 - Elena’s Stand

Three days later, the rain returned, washing away the chalk marks the movers had left on the driveway of Crestview Lane.

I sat in Marcus Vance’s corner office on the fortieth floor of the Newark legal tower, sipping hot chamomile tea. Across from me sat Elena, Diego’s younger sister.

Elena looked exhausted, her eyes rimmed with red, but her posture was straighter than I had ever seen it. In her lap lay a thick leather-bound diary—her private journal from the past eight years, detailing every financial demand, every emotional assault, and every instance of abuse Teresa had inflicted on her and her child.

“I’m sorry, Verónica,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking as she pushed the book across the glass table to Marcus Vance. “I was a coward for so long. Mom… she had this way of making you feel like if you took one step outside her circle, you would stop existing. She controlled my child’s trust fund. She threatened to cut Mateo off if I ever spoke up about who his real father was.”

I reached across the table and covered Elena’s shaking hands with my own.

“You aren't a coward, Elena,” I said gently. “You called me from the kitchen. You called Marcus. You gave us the ledgers that broke Diego’s legal defense. You saved Sofía.”

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek. “Mateo… he’s so confused. He thinks this is all his fault because of the doll.”

“It’s not his fault,” I said firmly. “Mateo was a weapon Teresa used to hurt my daughter, but the boy didn't choose the hands that held him. When this is over, Elena, Mateo will have his own independent trust, protected entirely from Diego and Teresa. Sofía and Mateo are brother and sister. They deserve to grow up knowing that the monsters who ruled this family don't speak for them.”

Marcus Vance closed the leather journal with a sharp, satisfying snap.

“With this testimony, Mrs. Delgado,” Vance said, looking at me with that rare, brilliant smile, “Diego’s criminal defense team has officially reached out to negotiate a global settlement. They are offering full surrender of all marital claims, immediate transfer of all disputed real estate back to the Delgado Estate, and complete, permanent termination of Diego’s parental rights in exchange for the State dropping the federal wire fraud enhancements.”

I looked out the high glass window at the rain sweeping across the city skyline.

“Termination of parental rights?” I asked softly.

“Permanent,” Vance confirmed. “He will have no legal standing, no visitation rights, no ability to ever approach Sofía again. You will hold sole legal and physical custody, unencumbered by a single Morales name.”

“Tell them yes,” I said without a single second’s hesitation. “Let him sign it today.”
